I know how you feel. It's horrible out there.

I think the trick is to find something good to focus on. I was getting very upset about not being able to get out anymore because of my deteriorating mobility on top of my social anxiety so I have started focusing on my plants and bought lots more for my bedroom since I spend the majority of my time in bed as there isn't a downstairs toilet so I can't sit downstairs. Now I look out at the world through fronds. It has helped my mood tremendously. They say green has a positive effect on mood and I can certainly testify as to the truth of that. It gives me gentle activities to do and things to learn as well. I don't worry about spending money on plants as I can truthfully say it's therapy. (Not that we have to justify our spending. It's only spending to deliberately reduce savings in order to claim benefits where you couldn't otherwise that can be penalised.)

I catch myself and deliberately turn my attention when I start focusing on the negative. I try to do a mindfulness thing with the news and just let it wash over me. I can't do anything about it so I don't let it start spinning my mind up into problem solving mode.

I also learn languages to keep my mind busy. My French is coming along quite nicely these days.

These ideas might not appeal to you but hopefully you get the idea. A positive distraction or two is the answer.

Catherine21, it's very unlikely the DWP would be sending out cars to spy on people, also you can spend your money on whatever you want, even gamble it away. They just don't want you making money from some kind of job without declaring it, even if it's just buying and selling things online for a profit, or going over the savings threshold without declaring it.

Like bookrabbit said try and switch your focus to more positive things, whatever TV show is playing in your head most of the time is what will mainly influence how you feel.

Unfortunately Catherine21 the media can best sell adverts if their TV shows are frightening and upsetting. That's what people respond to most and that's how these companies make money. By attracting our interest.

As others have written above and Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters so often sang:

You've got to ac-cent-tchu-ate the positive

    E-lim-i-nate the negative

    Latch on to the affirmative

    Don't mess with Mr. In-Between

You've got to spread joy up to the maximum

Bring gloom down to the minimum...

In my experience the world is full of interesting distractions.

I don't watch them so can only share search results, but at the very least these positive news channels exist:

    https://www.positive.news/

    https://www.goodnewspost.co.uk/

    https://m.youtube.com/%40ITVNewsUpliftingStories

    Many others will too.

Good luck, IMHO things beyond our control shouldn't concern us.

    😺

I can relate to how you feel @Catherine21 Sometimes I want to get off social media and the news in general and just bury myself in the tiny bubble of my life. Other times, I feel I have a responsibility to engage with the outside world and speak up when witnessing all the bad things that have been happening. It's not easy on one's mental health.
