Planning and following a journey

I was awarded 12 points at last review for planning and following a journey as support staff accompanied me if I went out anywhere, I’m now living in council accommodation with floating mental health support, Hestia, she and psychiatrist written letters of support saying struggle to leave the house, extreme anxiety and distress trying to go out alone, said I attempt supermarket every few weeks but often abandon trip due to overwhelming anxiety, disorientation etc, are they likely to remove my enhanced mobility for planning and following a journey through attempts to visit supermarket?

    Hi,

They are likely to downgrade it to Standard Mobility this time. But not for the reason you think.

Attempting the supermarket every few weeks is not at all relevant for PIP. But if you are no longer able to go out on the majority of days then you likely fit the 10 points descriptor instead now. Unable to attempt any journey (on the majority of days) due to Overwhelming Psychological Distress.

In order to score 12 points you need to be able to go out on the majority of days with another person.

It's worth noting that not all assessors understand this descriptor, and may just continue to award you the 12 points as you had it last time.

yes I thought at least they’re going to downgrade it to standard, do you know what rate £this is? I’m overwhelmed by the while review process, all past reviews have not had any telephone or face to face assessment, also the gruelling time scale of the review taking a year to complete and the not knowing, would prefer for it to be done quickly so I can financially plan accordingly, thank you for your reply

The current rate for Standard Mobility is £29.20 per week. That will increase to £30.30 per week in April.

It would be an approximate loss of £50 per week from Enhanced down to Standard.

thank you, hoping they score me 12 again for mobility as I do struggle to leave the house, I was in supported accommodation when they reviewed me last and am expecting them to reduce points as now in a council flat but I still get weekly support who comes to the flat once a week, she has supplied support letter stating that I struggle with daily living activities, just this wait to find out what they decide, and they’ve told me could be up to a year to process

Hopefully you continue to get the same award @kingston. I'm waiting for my PIP review too and it's been almost a year I think since they started the process. Fingers crossed yours is a bit quicker. Some people have had theirs back within a couple of weeks but that seems rare. There doesn't seem to be any reason why some take longer than others.

How are you feeling about the wait?

I just called helpline to see progress, they said is in the queue to be decided if assessment is necessary, both reviews previously have been paper based and I’ve had no telephone or face to face assessment previously, they did however contact my care cordinator last review. I requested my report from last assessment and there is a lot of emphasis on me being in supported accommodation which I’m no longer in so I am expecting a reduction in award, they did however helpline operator said wait times are not as long as before and to expect decision in a few months, I am concerned they will see my move to a council property from supported ac as an improvement although I still get weekly support from mental health worker and am still under care of hospital mental health trust, just gotta wait and see but not convinced they will maintain current award 😩

That's good that the wait isn't as long at the moment. They'll look at how your condition affects you day to day and not where you're living. Has your condition improved at all?

You can always appeal their decision if it's not what you think it should be. However, if you are awarded something and appeal, you may lose the award altogether.

My condition hasn’t improved, on complex medication for mental health condition, still require high level mental health support from psychiatrist, psychologist, support worker, have all sent supporting letter for me, hoping that’s enough to maintain current award

Sounds like you've got a lot of evidence to support your claim so hopefully it'll be ok. I wish the process was quicker so we didn't have to sit and wonder for so long!

phoned helpline today, he said wait times are only a couple of months, agent told me last week could take a year, I don’t think they have a clue so just tell you anything tbh

I mean they can’t expect disabled people not to try to supermarket (though often abandon trip) gotta wait and see though

This has literally nothing to do with PIP. It's about the majority of days, not trying something once every few weeks.

The reason that it would be downgraded is because you now go out less often with another person. In order to score the full 12 points you need to be able to go out on the majority of days, as well as always being with another person. If you cannot go out on the majority of days then you fit the 10 points descriptor which is Standard Mobility.
