Hello,

I'm new, I have some specific questions to ask about disability and work but thought I'd introduce myself as well. I like to play videogames and boardgames, watch films, learn new things.

I used to work in the games industry which people sometimes find pretty cool, it could be at times, could be extremely stressful as well though.

Hello @Songbearer! Welcome to the community, great to have you with us and thanks for telling us a little about yourself ☺️

Working in the games industry does sound interesting but I bet it was quite high pressured too. What kind of games did you work on, was it video games or board games?

It was videogames, different roles I worked on different stuff. I worked on the launch of the Xbox One all those years ago (probably the best job I ever had despite being a zero hours contract) and then have dipped into a lot of different places over the years.

That is pretty cool @Songbearer! My son wants to be a video games designer and is starting college in September. Any advice?

My family love board games. I love Taboo, Scattergories, and Codenames. What are your favourites? I always love learning about new games.

Honestly, I'd say to someone trying to get into the industry, I'd be encouraging but also realistic, build a parallel pathway into multiple jobs/industries if you can, so say, if someone wanted to be a games artist, look at building a portfolio that could be used for tv/film/other art, for example.

If he's starting college, I'd say definitely try and get involved in game jams where groups of people just make games based around a theme over a short period of time. It's the best time to build a solid group of future colleagues and such. Making a mod for a game or small projects is good as well, gets you practical experience and a thing you can point too and say "this is what I can do off my own back" in the future, can be a way to get hired in some circles.

I was quality assurance so I was checking the game or software out and finding issues, documenting them, or running teams doing that.

Board games wise, Codenames is really great yeah. I play a lot of Arkham Horror, which is like a co-operative card game/RPG, set in the Lovecraft mythos but made by a modern, good company so it's much less….. problematic than his actual work.
