Universal Basic Income: What Would It Mean for Disabled and Long Term Sick?

You've brought in a dictionary definition to try to settle the disagreement, but it doesn’t actually resolve the nuance.
In the context of benefits, PIP isn’t treated as income for means-tested calculations, which is why people distinguish it from earnings or other benefits.

David cameron got pip for his son

Your thinking about this is too rigid.

I’m not sure how you’re defining “income,” but for practical day-to-day purposes, PIP isn’t treated as income. If it were, Student Finance would count it and make deductions, but they don’t. The same applies in situations like bankruptcy or a DRO. Even UC doesnt. So it’s not entirely clear what definition you’re using, but it doesn’t reflect how “income” is generally understood in practice.

The man was a complete hypocrite, despite having a disabled son, he went after the disabled with benefit cuts etc….

I think we’re actually saying similar things now. In a literal sense it can be 'seen' as income, but in the context of benefits it’s treated differently, which is why people make the distinction. That’s more what I was getting at which you seem to be understanding now.

I totally agree

Just let it go now.

That is no way to speak to a new member.

I'm not speaking to her in any way, I just kindly asked her to let it go now as the debate that we were having is now resolved, so there's no point in trying to continue it. It wasn't meant in a bad way, I think sometimes the tone of a post can be misread.

I can't see how UBI could work or be afforded come to that. It is another of those ideas that should be shelved, for good. Whether the Greens will hang onto it, who knows. As they've said it would take so long, it surely is a non starter. Time to go yet, so many more ideas for them to come up with, probably none of them suitable. Fix what we have with no other name changes would be better.
It is a real shame that they changed From Disability Living Allowance to Personal Independence Payment, it was so more straightforward & on that, you could be awarded for life, saving long term/never getting better disabled suffering damn assessments & would have saved the government money too!

I'm going to gently remind everyone participating in this discussion to remain civil and constructive, and to be mindful of taking a step back if your contribution may only serve to escalate tensions.
It's quite clear that the same core point is being made by several people, that PIP functions as an income, but is disregarded as income within the benefits system. However, much of the recent discussion has focused on semantics, which is moving the conversation away from its original purpose and isn’t helping anyone.
I’d also like to remind everyone that all members are welcome to contribute or engage in discussions. However, if you feel a conversation is no longer productive, you’re always free to step back yourself.
Please make sure any further comments remain respectful and in keeping with our house rules.

Going back to the original discussion, when thinking of Universal Basic Income it might help to look at real-world examples, from trials in countries like Finland and pilots in Namibia and India.
I’d be interested to hear what people think these kinds of outcomes might mean specifically for disabled people in the UK.
