I read through most of this very interesting article. I don't agree with everything she said but think she makes some good points.
I have a female cousin who was autistic from a young age but didn't receive a diagnosis until recently in her 40's.
She feels she masked to fit in but I haven't said to her (as I don't want to cause any upset) it was really obvious growing up and since that she is autistic.
In those days you had to be non verbal rocking in a corner to be diagnosed, thankfully times have moved on as knowledge and understanding improved.

If anyone has lived a whole life masking they would undedstand how earth shattering it really is and to say if your diagonsed earlier its autusim ??? Well tbh if i had parents that cared and got me proper help as a child who knows i could of had a life i had to bring myself up and mask every second for 51 years i beleive this is all linked to goverment looking into the rise of adhd autuism cases and with that the timms report laying the ground work already as the rise in adhd in woman yes those adhd kids teenagers woman have suffered at every milstones of thier life and men as well to finally get answers to be told its social anxiety i fear we are going so far backwards its unbelivable

Do you think its improved ? With the statements firth made and i really wonder what the report comes back on adhd autuism maybe im negative as lost all trust in the goverment and thier intentions everything seems to be a money cutting exercise

She does have some good points and some bad, but in my case its fairly obviously i'm autistic. It would take you less than 10 secs to realise this if you were with me, with how I act, speak and lack of eye contact etc. I was diagnosed at age 17 though due to neglect/lack of understanding from my family but still it was fairly obvious when I was young as I didn't learn to speak till age 6 and my gross motor function was really bad. So I would of been diagnosed earlier if it was recognised more, but it wasn't a wide known thing years ago and this is where the problem is. People missed out becuase of lack of understanding years ago and wasn't diagnosed when they were young. Does this mean they have to then miss out on support?

I think one reason why some people find Uta Frith's comments shocking is that she questions ideas that have become widely accepted in both clinical discussions and autistic communities. For example, her scepticism around concepts like masking or reliance on subjective self report is seen by some as downplaying lived experience. For people who strongly relate to those concepts it can feel invalidating.
At the same time, I don’t think her position is coming from a dismissive place. It reads more like a push for tighter scientific definitions and clearer diagnostic boundaries. From that perspective, her argument about the spectrum being too broad is a legitimate academic concern. If a diagnostic category becomes very wide, it can make research harder and potentially less precise when trying to understand underlying mechanisms or tailored support.

Yh thats some good points but my fear is the adhd review their conducting wont be fair and will be used to cut people from pip because in one breath they cant say its not the diagnois its how it effects you then say adhd doesnt fit the new critiera my personal thoughts are they will offer therapy which i totally get bit ibe had years of therapy and it hasnt helped but will have to wait and see ive been guessing what thier going to do since sunaks sick note britian speech 2023 !!

Hopefully they wont make things like PIP even more difficult for people with mental health issues, being classed as unfit for work at a WCA or being awarded PIP is already very difficult enough as it is even if you're genuinely entitled to these things. They should be making things fairer rather than harder.

I don't think you have been deliberately ignored @Lilybud, but the thing is, not all have a diagnosis, but are sure they meet the threshold; i too think i am autistic, but have never asked about or been diagnosed as such.
