hi do you have to claim carers allowance when giving up work to become a carer. I claim universal credit and will i be expected to look for work if I am not not claiming carers allowance for being a carer thanks Sarah

Why would you want to give up claiming Carers Allowance? As you care for someone for at least 35 hours a week, why stop claiming? If you did stop then you would be £156 per month worse off in your UC. Carers Allowance is deducted from UC BUT CA will pay you, so you won't lose out, as i already explained.

I would advise you to ask him exactly what he does claim before starting a claim for CA. If he claims Severe Disability premium and you claim CA for him, then he will lose this £64.30 per week.If he lives alone then it's highly possible that he does claim it.
