Does delaying starting wearing hearing aids mean losing hearing?

I have also been advised by High St retailer to wear hearing aids - he suggested that if I delayed the start of wearing them then the sounds my auditory nerve was already struggling with may potentially be lost . Is this the case?

    That’s a new one on me!!!!!!

    Following my Stroke in 1998 at the age off 32. 

    I had a number of hearing aids in the past via Eye Hospitals/ Consultants & I have never had anyone tell me that!!!!

    I have also had my people/friends/family with them fitted & they have never mentioned anything like this!!!!! 

    A number off years ago now I used to work in a rehab centre dealing with many many patients who also had them fitted.

    I can find you some info on the web if that would help!!!!!!

    I have not come across this before, does sound like an enthusiastic salesman.
    Did you go for a hearing test specifically  ?

    If you are concerned about your hearing, you can get a free hearing test on the NHS. Your GP may refer you to a hearing specialist (audiologist) who can do the test.

    Backing up @Sam_Scope here. Do the NHS test and talk to your GP.It may be that the hearing aid salesperson was correct, but it these are businesses driven by the desire to make money.
