Statutory Sick Pay

Hi!

I'm posting on behalf of my Mum who has a full time retail job. We're a bit confused about her entitlement to SSP.

She became ill in April 2018 and was off work for 6 months. She was paid the full 28 weeks Statutory sick pay.

She went back to work in December 2018 and after a phased return to work, she's worked full time since.

However, she now has another unrelated illness that is stopping her working.

Is she entitled to another 28 weeks SSP? We're confused as different websites say yes and some say no. We think as long as the last ssp ended more than 8 weeks ago - she should get it again.

Hi @Jurph As this is an employer paid benefit, ran by HMRC. You should speak to HMRC on helpline tel 0300 200 3500. Let us know how you get on.

Hello @Jurph, did you or your mum manage to find out the answer from HMRC?

    Hi @Adrian_Scope

Unfortunately, she's been hospitalised and hasn't managed to call them.

They wouldn't answer me. I said it's a general question but they just said my Mum has to call. I'm afraid I gave up.

I'm sorry to hear your mother is in hospital @Jurph.
I do find some they can be a little over-zealous when it comes to this. If you asked it as a general query and not in regards to your mother personally, they should have been able to answer you.
It may be worth giving ACAS a call as they should know the answer.
