    My son i is 19 and is socially isolated  has your daughter  been able to socialise

    No never, she's almost 19 too. Attends a special needs college and never goes out alone. She doesn't really communicate with anyone except myself and her sister. She does receive 8 hours of support each week from a personal assistant and this allows her to be able to go out and do the things she want to do.

    Is your son is college?

    No he only made one day at college he  couldn't cope with it .he has a stuffed rabbit he carries and they didn't want him to have it so that didn't make him happy.like your daughter he has 9 hours a week but doesn't always get out.when he does go out it's only to cafes which is not the best.he wants friends but it's hard to know where to start

    My daughter was late being diagnosed and she was 17. One of the questions i asked when she had her diagnosis was about this very subject and i was told i should let her do her own thing.

    People with ASD like to be alone and forcing them to do something they don't feel comfortable with isn't the best idea because you're forcing them outside their comfort zone. I never thought of it that way until that day and i always tried hard to help her social anxiety. Now i just let her do her own thing, Difficult, i agree but for me it's about my daughter being happy and i can't force her to do something she's not happy with.

    My son wants friends and a girlfriend possibly but it's knowing where to start.he just wants a friend to go out with but where we live there is not much

    Hi stezza, my son is mildly autistic and also has epilepsy but thankfully this is occasionally and always in his sleep. I only posted yesterday as he is sooo lonely and speaks often about taking his own life as no-one would miss him anyway!! It's heartbreaking.  Just a friend would be great for him. Where in the country are you. I just need him to be in contact with people who are like minded,who don't think him weird. X

    Hi stezza

    My daughter has autism and learning difficulties too, she is exactly like your son, wants friends. She goes to college two days a week but I take and pick her up, even there though she is bullied. The kids in the class are on the spectrum too apparently and there the ones giving her verbal abuse. Just cause she doesn't like what they like. I'm completely lost as to what to do. Hope your son is ok though, I joined here looking for advice too.

    Aww sorry your daughter is getting such a hard time can not take her out of the college.it's a shame our children couldn't get together with us supervising of course .maybe they could be penpals

    Hi again stezza, 

    I've thought about doing it many times to be fair, she told me once that the girls in the class, once pretended not to know her at all, she was so hurt and confused by the so called joke, honestly I felt so bad, but she doesn't want to give up her course  that's why I've not taken her out yet. Pen pals,  I've never thought about that, sounds like a great idea.

    Thanks Ails, just nice to be amongst people who have experienced similar problems.  We've never had the offer of help or advice from anyone before this but I'm at the stage I feel I really need to reach out to other folk who know about autism and such like.

    You are very welcome, @jazz1979 and I'm really glad that you are finding it useful to speak to others in a similar position to yourself.  I'm sorry to hear that you have had no help or advice in the past so no wonder you want to reach out to people for help now.  Have you tried the National Autistic Society to see if they can offer you any help also?  Here is the link to their website if you would like to take a look:-
