Hello @Globster. Welcome to Scope!
Swimming is a good activity for disabled people. Many local leisure centres have a public pool which you can use. Start by contacting someone at your local leisure centre to see if they can help you.
Ask about access points to the pool too. There might be a lift. Another option is to take someone with you to assist. Do you employ paid for carers or not? If so ask them if they know of any pools for disabled folk. A local leisure centre in the area where I reside, runs a discount scheme for families of disabled people. My son loves the water. He has been to the local pool a few times in the past twelve months with me or his dad.
This is a good way to build up your skill and confidence. Take it easy at first is my first piece of advice. http://www.swimming-techniques-learn.com/Swimming-for-disabled.html

Hi @Globster, what kind of assistance are you looking for?
I'm tagging @Richard_Scope who might be able to add some more information.

Hi @Globster
Have you tried the new Wave Centre in the centre of Coventry? You also have the swimming pool at the Village hotel and the pool at the University of Warwick. All of the pools have a hoist and accessible changing rooms. The pools are heated so won't make your legs too tight. None of these centres provides assistance with getting changed. You will need to go with a family member or a PA, if you need this type of assistance.

Found this today on my Facebook. Not specific to Coventry, but may be useful in general.
