Hi all my little girl has been diagnosed with a sever neurological disorder, metabolic condition amongst other things. Just wondering if anyone knows or can advice what they did about their child’s sleeping like do I follow advice of the amount she should sleep which is 8 months (Her actual age) of do I follow what she is at developmentally (around 3 months) or the fact she may need more sleep because of her condition. I’m struggling with her day time naps and not sure how much sleep she should be getting.
Thanks
laura

Hi @lauradawes, unfortunately I don't know the answer to your question. But I hope someone will be along who might be able to advise soon.1

HI @lauradawes
Thing with babies is they haven't' read the parent manuals and amount of sleep babies need is usually generalised. My 3 children all needed differing amounts of sleep, now they are teenagers that follows true too! However I do understand your confusion, my instinct is physical age, rather than cognitive age as amount of sleep is about periods of growth and then time awake to learn new skills. But to be sure you could check with your health visitor, or if there is a specialist health visitor attached to your paediatrican they could advise you. Our sleep team work with families when children reach age of 2 but they may be able to answer this @Kerry_Scope ??

Hi @lauradawes
The average sleep needs chart is very generalised and should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Every child with or without additional needs, will need different amounts of sleep.
Some neurological conditions do cause a high level of fatigue so the child may require more sleep, but you would usually see signs of fatigue through the day.
We would usually work with behaviours/goals linked to the child's developmental age.
As EmmaR_Scope stated depending on where you live we do offer a parent led sleep service for children aged 2-18 years.
Get in touch if you have any further questions?
Thanks @Kerry_Scope0 -
