I can imagine that as being very rewarding, and good for society as well, thanks for sharing.

For me I feel cheery when I go out for a drive on the country lanes. I also feel cheery when I have some good food to enjoy. Both selfish things that don’t contribute anything to society but that’s what makes me feel cheery!1 -
Playing with my dog years ago used to make me happy and remembering her still makes me smile.
It must be nice to work with with sick animals, seeing them gain strength and recover, hopefully. I did volunteer for such work once when there was a vacancy but they chose someone else instead. Never mind, as someone once said you can’t say things would have been better only that they would have been different, if that makes sense.1
