New diagnosis

My son has recently been diagnosed with hemiplegic cerebral palsy and we're not being given any help or advice from doctors. He has a fear of loud noise and I wondered if this is just a phobia or if it maybe part of his condition. Any advice please

Hello @vix125 and welcome to the community. How old is your son? I'm afraid I don't know whether there is a connection between CP and a fear of loud noises (hopefully our CP expert @Richard_Scope can help you out with that query when he's back in the office tomorrow). However I did do a little search just now and have seen lots of people ask the same question. It's definitely worth mentioning to his paediatrician though.
My daughter doesn't have CP but struggles with sensory overload. She wears earmuffs/headphones a lot of the time to help her feel more comfortable, especially in loud environments. Would this be an option for your son?1 -
Thank you, I've bought him headphones today, he's 8. Hopefully it helps him. At the moment we are getting no help or advice from the doctors at all, and looking into changing his paediatrician, so I've googled...another and found the same question a number of times but no real answers, Google is my best and worst friend at the moment. Thanks for the reply0

Hi @vix125
Some people with CP can have a sensitivity to loud noises and environments. This could be due to moro/startle reflex and his discomfort with the startle or he may have a general sensitivity to noise, Has your son had an assessment for ASD at all? I would also recommend looking at HemiHelp.
Keep me updated and if I can help in any way do let me know.0 -
Thanks for the response. No he's had no other assessments. We've just been given the diagnosis and been left to get on with things, so just googling and learning as we go. Thanks again0

The paediatrician should be guiding you all through this process. Contact our Navigate team. Many of my colleagues have gone through very similar situations.0

Thank you I've done that now. Thanks again1
