Do we fly the flag enough?

On the Jeremy Vine show today he asked this question. Do we in this country flag our flag enough.
This came from the complaint that Boris Johnson is spending too much money on flags for government buildings.
I believe that we do not fly it enough and should feel proud to do so. My wife is American and whenever I am over there, I see their flag flying everywhere. Many people have it flying outside their house.
I know many people are against seeing it fly because of the British Empire and the Imperialism it caused. This is mostly protested by those British people whose ancestry is from another country. Although I can understand their protest and the reasons why. It is the flag of the country and we should be proud to fly it. Remember many people died defending it after all.

I have noticed too that most other nationalities, but particularly Americans, are patriotic whereas the British on the whole don't seem to be.

I can see both sides of the argument but what I would say is that I don't think any country is truly innocent - every country has a past. Italy had the Roman Empire which enslaved millions and colonised, France and the Netherlands had imperialism, Germany had the Nazis, America was taken from the natives and built on slavery, Japan and China have a pretty dark history, etc. Why should we be ashamed of our past any more than any of those countries?

I totally agree. History is what it is and cannot be changed. It doesn't mean we should be ashamed of it or the flag.

I thought it was nice to see our young athletes waving out flag at the olympics. I personally don’t think of politics when I see the union flag, but I guess there are others more politically minded who do.

    Hi @Username_removed

You have to show true loyalty to the Union Jack. Like by way of example, Matt Hancock stood under the flag, whilst compelling the English how to strictly adhere to rules he had introduced.

That lasted well after the Sun article!! Hands Face Ar….

The irony of displaying the UK flag, when he was only speaking about England, would have been ridiculed, if it had been a cartoon in Private Eye.

For the record, I have been to watch Scotland v England at Murryfield a number of times.  I would not insult my hosts, by displaying a Union Jack, on their sacred turf.

Neither would I take said flag, to watch England play test cricket in Wales. Especially when it getting late in the day, and the bars are full.

These are my opinions and not been seen as facts, bar say Hancock.

Interesting to hear your comments. I can clearly see there are those that don't believe in the union anymore. Thats fine but I see no problem with flying the Welsh flag anywhere in the country, or the Scottish flag for that matter. It is something they are proud of and so should we be,
