Angry man

Today I was out enjoying a nice drive in the countryside when someone who was jogging along the side of the road turned and shouted a load of expletives at me for a reason I am struggling to work out.

- I was doing 10mph as I was about to stop for a junction so not going too fast.

- I gave him space like you should for a pedestrian.

- My car isn’t offensive or loud and doesn’t stand out. It’s a bog standard small hatchback.

Can anyone think why else someone would get so angry?

I am trying to work out if I did anything wrong and if I did would fully accept it because like everyone I am not a perfect driver and make mistakes but I intend to only make each one once and learn from them. I am really into advanced driving and driving safely as it’s my main hobby.

I just laughed at him which seemed to make him even angrier but this is how I deal with situations like this because I don’t really take anything seriously (except driving) and have learnt it’s not worth getting into arguments with unreasonable people.

I’m glad I’m not him. It must be horrible to get so angry for no reason.

Unless you splashed him with a puddle or loose gravel(unlikely at 10mph) you're probably going to have to put it down to 'there's nowt so queer as folk'

Probably nothing to do with you some people go running to relieve anger

Good thought. I am pretty sure there was no water as you always have to be on the look out for potholes on that particular road lol :D I think the last bit is probably the truth I guess.

Perhaps he was having a bad day.
Don’t see how that’s my fault but I guess some people don’t think straight when they are angry!

    Yeah that’s a good thought.

In hindsight I wonder if we should have stopped and asked what was wrong and if I did anything to upset him but I don’t think he was in the mood for a chat.

I'm sorry this happened to you; I know I would have felt just as unsettled if someone had done this to me, & wondered what I may have done wrong. As others have said, I'm sure you hadn't done anything wrong, & we can't always explain others unreasonable behaviour. I hope you didn't let it spoil your day. :)

@chiarieds I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who would have responded the way I did. No, luckily I didn’t let it spoil my day. Also I think in the past I may have had a drink to calm down but I didn’t so that’s positive. :)

This is the type of event that my OCD really latches onto.  Even years after the event it'll pop back up & I'll feel really guilty despite not knowing whether I'd actually done anything wrong.  :|

The 'professional' answer is that we just have to try and accept the uncertainty in these sort of situations and move on.  Easier said than done though!
