Hi, my name is Nickytam! Claiming free or reduced road tax

Hello! I just joined the 'Scope' Community.

I own and drive a Renault Kangoo disability vehicle and have done for around 3 years. I also have a 'Blue Badge' entitling me to park in Disabled parking bays. 

I also own a disability scooter which I use for local shopping in my area.

I have only just found out that I may have been able to claim free or reduced Road Tax on my vehicle.   

Apparently, I need a 'Certificate of Entitlement' in order to claim reduced cost or free Road Tax.

So much *information overload* on the subject of acquiring a Certificate of Entitlement and I wondered if anyone in the community here, could assist me with a better route to obtaining that Certificate of Entitlement?

    Hi,
    For the road tax it totally depends on which disability benefit you receive. If it's DLA then you need to be claiming high rate mobility and this will entitle you to free road tax.
    If you're claiming PIP Enhanced mobility then this will also entitle you to free road tax. You need to ring DWP to ask for a certificate of entitlement.
    If you're claiming Standard mobility PIP then this entitles you to 50% reduction in road tax and to claim this you need to send everything to DVLA, including your PIP award letter.

    If you're claiming Attendance Allowance this doesn't entitle you to and free/reduced road tax.

    Hello @Nickytam - & welcome to the community, Nick.
    Being exempt from vehicle tax depends on whether you get a certain rate of some benefits. The main ones are if you are in receipt of the higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance, or the enhanced rate for the mobility component of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP). There's a 50% reduction if you rather get the standard mobility component of PIP. You can see further details here: https://www.gov.uk/financial-help-disabled/vehicles-and-transport

    Thanks for your replies.

    Oddly enough, I don't receive any benefits whatsoever, disability or otherwise.  DWP (aka (Removed by moderator, inappropriate comment') have been extremely difficult to communicate with.

    I hope the above replies have been helpful about the road tax, and I'm sorry that you have had difficulty with the DWP in the past. When you say they've been difficult to communicate with, what do you mean by this? Are you currently in the middle of a claim or was this in the past?

    Just to let you know, I have moved your discussion to our benefits and financial support category and changed the title to reflect the subject. Also, I have removed part of your last comment because I don't think it was an appropriate way to describe the DWP and could offend others, although I do of course acknowledge your frustrations.
