Last October / November ish time I was placed into temp accommodation by the council, I was given a pay point card and told that I will receive housing benefit and I will need to pay my rent using the pay point card.
so in November I received my uc and a further £848.34 for my rent. I went onto the councils website to check my bill and it said £0.00 I also moved properties 2 days before
my uc was due
I rang the council and they said I didn’t owe anything and I’m upto date and they said to ring uc to ask if the paid my rent and paid me
after ringing uc they said they had only made the 1 payment to myself, so I rang the council back and told them and they said well you don’t owe us anything
so I rang uc again to report the mistake and at the time also told my work coach this was December and have heard nothing since
i have been told it can take upto 6 years for them to claim back overpayments is this right ? Also would they want the amount back in full ?

I haven’t spent it as I know it’s not mine but thinking maybe I could use this to pay my council tax bill ?

If there is any overpayment of UC then they wouldn't expect it to be paid back in full. They would reduce your UC monthly to repay the debt.
