New iPhones

I follow Apple (the electronics company) as I like some of their products and like to know when they release new bits. I notice some new iPhones have just been announced.
Starting at £849 there is the “basic” iPhone.
There is the “iPhone Pro” starting at £1,099
The big one with the 1TB of memory is £1,749.
I may be out of touch, but that to me is a HELL of a lot for a mobile phone!!!
I know most people choose to pay monthly, but that must be near-on £100 a month!!!
Am I just a dinosaur or is that a lot of money?

It is a lot of money, my kids have iphones we pay monthly for, not the latest models, but they do like them, i think those new ones are really pricey, i wonder how people can afford them0

I phone have always been expensive the same as other apple products very over priced in my opinion and also very expensive to get repaired
My son has iPhone xs and new screens were £175 when I last looked . They ars also hard to get sorted if you lock yourself out
I prefer Samsung bug again latest models are expensive0 -
@woodbine That's very nice of your neighbour. I'm the same as you, I like my Macs, but I just need a basic phone. That said I do prefer Apple even for phones so I have an iPhone SE which cost £400.
@Grinchy I was thinking the same, I see loads of people out and about with the latest phones, maybe the cost of living crisis isn't so bad!
@janer1967 I found that true in the past that Apple used to cost more, but the gap is closing now, as you say the latest Samsung models are expensive as well.1 -
I'm a Samsung fan too0

Iphone all the way for me and have been for many years. I think i'm on my 4th phone and recently had an upgrade. I chose the 1phone 13 pro max this time (contract), so it's the biggest phone. I only pay £43/month, which includes unlimited calls and texts and 2GB of data but i rarely use data because i have wifi at home.My daughter changed to Samsung from iphone about 4 years ago and regretted it so she changed back to iphone a couple of years ago.0

If you have an iPhone from iPhone 7 upto iPhone 13 pro max you can get money off with trade in. So if you bought the iPhone 13 pro max last year you can get £625 off when you purchase 14 pro 1tb. Still very expensive but some people want the newest and best even if it puts them in debt. I bought a Motorola smartphone for £250 ( still a bit pricey) last year and happy with it. Can't see myself paying over £500+ for a phone I wouldn't feel good afterwards.0

I use iPhones, currently iPhone SE and only because I went through a period of needing access to my emails at work at that time (prior to that, I had a phone with minimal functionality - it texted and made / took phone calls).I agree that £1749 is expensive for a phone; I would never, in a million years, pay that for a phone. But that isn`t what astounds me (well, it does, but not as much as this next bit); who on earth needs 1TB of storage on a phone? That amount of storage suggests to me that it`s aimed at the portion of society who are obsessed with selfishies.

I’m an iPhone fan all the way and follow their new products like yourself. I currently have the iPhone 13 Pro Max which I mainly chose due to the screen size, I like the new phones although I don’t see it warrants an upgrade so I’ll hold off and get one of the 15 models instead next year. I have instead bought an Apple Watch series 8 as a treat but sold my old one for £200 so it’s only £240 for a new one. My iPad Pro 12.9 is quite old now too, bought it in 2020 when it was released and it’s my best purchase from them to date as it’s my daily driver and it’s helped me in so many ways. I also have AirPod Pros etc which I love but if I don’t have a good feel for something I could never possibly force myself to buy it.
I don’t get phones on contract I pay in full although I have a Sim only contract.
Apple have always been a rip off company but unfortunately I am too far sucked in to the system now lol!0 -
I am also an iPhone user, on contract, and while I don’t follow the releases as much, I get a new phone when the contract finishes, and a new iPad when it breaks. I also trade in, as much as I can, or sell the old ones. I use my iPad daily, as it’s my main screen for TV/streaming. I also own AirPods, and I use them daily, although I got them free with one of the back to education offers a couple of years ago. I am considering an Apple Watch at the moment, but I’m waiting for my fitbit to break before I decide.I like Apple devices, although I do agree they are expensive devices. I think I am also too far into the system 😂1

I guess for some people their phone is their main device - no computer or tablet - so maybe easier to justify paying for it.
@poppy123456 that seems like a good price for such an expensive phone. I did the same as your daughter but with computers not phones, went back to Windows ands regretted it.
@Cartini I believe the new iPhone 14 has a very good 48MP camera, the only downside being that the high quality photos are about 75mb in size, so maybe that's one reason?
@bg844 me too r.e. being suckered into AppleI like them though, they are so simple, don't get viruses, easy to use and everything just works. I hope you enjoy your new Apple Watch.

Just thought of an analogy..
For me a phone is just for making calls and sending texts. So I only need a basic one.
For lots of people a car is just getting from A to B, so they only need a basic one.
For me a car is much more than that though, and I am happy to pay more for a nice one.
I guess some people could say the same about a phone?2 -
I think that's an interesting way of thinking about it @66Mustang
I've never owned an iPhone, and agree that it does seem like an awful lot of money! I've always bought the handset outright. I think my current phone cost around £200 or so. I spend around £9 per month on my contract, which gives me unlimited calls and texts, and 30GB of data.

I've never owned or even tried an Apple phone. So far I've owned a few Androids, all under £150. Tried a Samsung A52 last year, approx £350, but didn't get on with it so returned it. I have spent the past year looking for an alternative and have just ordered a Google Pixel 6A at £319. (Nice saving from £399 RRP, only been out a couple of months).
Even that seems like an awful lot for a phone to me, especially when it's the budget option, but it's about the same size & shape as my old phone which was my main criteria! Didn't want anything physically bigger. At the moment I doubt I'll get on with that either, but will have to try something as my old phone is really on it's last legs now.0 -
A few years back now I went in to the EE shop with my brother and I remember having a play with the Samsung phones and deciding on the spot that I’m so glad I have an iPhone. He swapped from iPhone to Samsung and regretted it so I think it’s all down to personal tastes.0
