How long to wait before ringing PIP?

I sent our son's PIP application by registered post in July. Not heard anything. How long should I wait before chasing it? (It's a DLA to PIP application)

    There's potentially several months of waiting before you hear anything because of the backlogs. An assessment is most likely because most have them, this could be either by telephone, face to face or video call. His DLA will continue until a decision is made on this PIP.
