Help - ESA PENSION LUMP SUM

in Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
Hi there. My mum is 55 and receives New Style ESA support group (& PIP). She is looking to cash in a pension to get a lump sum (around 9k) to help with moving costs, stamp duty etc.

Will this have an affect on her benefits? My understanding is that it's not means tested so it will not. If I am correct, do you know if she has to inform the DWP of this payment regardless? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

    Nothing will be affected. You don’t need to notify ESA or PIP.

    Hi and sorry to ressurect an old thread for my first post but I have a similar question for my brother. He receives new style ESA in the Support group following a stroke during lockdown. Now 51, newly divorced and having to buy his own house he needs to tap his pensions (early medical retirement) for around 150k gross which we might stagger over 3 years for tax reasons to make up the funds for his house purchase. Seems this is not going to impact his ESA despite the amounts involved and even splitting over 3 years as 3 lump sums?

    Heya @Stusky25 and a very warm welcome to the community. 😁

    I doubt any of the original posters will reply due to the age of the discussion, but hopefully we can get some current members helping out.

    New style ESA isnt means tested, but I'm told that pension payouts can affect the ESA totals. I'd suggest speaking to someone at Citizens Advice or Age uk, they'd be better equipped with this slightly tricky situation.
