Please can anyone give me any advice on successfully claiming PIP with mobility element for IBD. I initially started claim in February 2022.

I have been through Mandatory Reconsideration process where DWP initially granted me nothing and then offered me higher element of daily living if I dropped my Tribunal. I can go to the toilet sometimes 20 times in a day and not always make it there I’m ashamed to say. I had submitted further evidence that had not been viewed. Gentlemen advised he would look at and call me back but never did.

I called back two months later to be told no change and going to tribunal despite GP stating I am unable to plan/go out on my own due to overwhelming anxiety.

Thank you for reading.

Welcome to the community @Mummy_In_Pain :) Thank you for joining us, though I'm sorry it's not under better circumstances!

Just so I can check I've understood correctly: are you currently at the tribunal stage?

If so, I'd encourage you to see if you can get some expert advice to help you through this. You can see sources of professional support in your area by searching on advicelocal.uk

Hello @Mummy_In_Pain. Welcome to Scope’s forum. It is great to see you have joined us. How are you generally?

Thank you for reaching out to us. I appreciate the courage it can take to reach out, especially when you are new and finding things difficult.

I can hear your frustrations that, despite your symptoms, you have been granted nothing unless you dropped your tribunal.

I will tag @Hannah_Scope in this just in case Hannah can support you further. I am sure our wonderful community members with more expertise in benefits will also be able to help.

Is there anything that might make the tribunal feel more manageable for you if you have to go through that process?

For example, I am wondering if you have been able to communicate this with your GP - especially given they recognise your difficulties.

As I say, hopefully, our wonderful community will be able to support you further soon. In the meantime, I mainly wanted to respond to greet you and let you know I hear you.

Take care for now and we will look forward to, hopefully, hearing from you again soon  :)

    Hello @Mummy_In_Pain

    I am also a fellow IBD'er.

I just want to start by saying, never be ashamed, it isn't your fault. I think a lot of people do not realise that chronic illnesses cannot be fixed, they are a lifelong condition where you will have your good days and bad days.

I would double check and ask why the further evidence hasn't been reviewed. When I looked on the GOV website they say:

    Mobility part

You might get the mobility part of PIP if you need help with:

    • working out a route and following it
    • physically moving around
    • leaving your home

You do not have to have a physical disability to get the mobility part. You might also be eligible if you have difficulty getting around because of a cognitive or mental health condition, like anxiety.

As a personal example, I could not travel via walking long distances or taking the bus because I lived with that urgency and no control over my bowels. Taking taxi's, driving or getting a lift was better for me because I was able to reach my destination quicker and more discreetly. When I had an accident, I was to able to get home or to a changing facility quicker.

These ways of travelling comes at a greater cost which is why those with IBD do put in to claim the mobility element of PIP, is that something you thought about?
