Background. I have several physical things going on like sleep apnea hypothyroidism high blood pressure and others as well as eupd and autism. In beginning of November 2021 I had COVID for a month then chest infection.
I apologise for the long rant, I'm just fed up and got no one for support. I live alone in a different country to where I grew up. I have young children but they live with their dad and they come visit when I'm not working, but no adult support or friend network.
I realise you are not doctors but any suggestions on self help things or tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.
Cough has now lasted about 14 months. My throat hurts from the strain, I can’t keep food down as when I cough I throw up.
When a coughing fit starts I struggle to breath in between and my bladder open every cough. It doesn’t leak a little with every cough even though I just been for a wee bladder opens and it’s like I wee myself every cough. I got no clean clothes and running out of pads, not that they catch all of it anyway.
I don’t have a stuffy nose but when I cough stuff that I think might be from stomach as it smells acidy but still quite mucusy fills my nostrils so have to blow my nose after every cough. After some coughs liquids like shot out of my mouth like a baby’s spit up or reflux, not a full on vomit just acidy liquid usually end up in front of me or on me.
ive slept on the sofa for last 4 weeks. I’m propped up to almost sitting position. It got better for about 5-6 days I almost didn’t cough at all in day and a few times during night. I didn’t really change anything but it got worse again and after a few days it was as bad as ever. I always sleep badly during night and on a good night I was up around 2 to 3 times a night. Now I snooze about 10-30 min at a time before having to get up again.
I’m exhausted agitated and just sick of the whole thing. I just want to not have damp or wet clothes being able to sleep in the night and function during the day. I can’t even finish an episode or film on TV or play any of my favourite games as I fall asleep mid through anything.
My anxiety about leaving the house has worsened even more as a 5-10 min walk can end up with me throwing up on the street and/or ending up with urine soaked clothes in public. My tummy hurts from bringing stuff up. There is a wheezy sound in my throat when I breath and I have coughed up blood without anything else a few times as well. I think the blood is due to strain but worried I might be causing long term damage.
Hot drinks does not help, food makes it worse and makes me vomit. Very fizzy drinks helps ease the cough for a short time but ran out of money for those as well. Water doesn’t particularly help but soothe a tiny bit in very large amounts, but it does also make the bladder leakage worse.
Had a chest X ray in April or may last year. It was clear and not been taken seriously since then. Was referred for another one in end of November. Waited two weeks for appointment call or letter then found out I was a walk in but not been notified. In December work was so busy and had no funds to get to hospital for X ray. I’m at my Witt’s end and starting to really feel I can’t take it anymore.

I work full time from home and luckily have managed to keep performance acceptable. However I do have episodes over the day where I fall asleep mid tasks sitting by my desk, I’m usually stuck like that for 20-40 minutes drifting in and out of sleep. As my performance is acceptable and appreciated I have not told my employer about actually falling asleep during work as I think that would have negative impact. They do know about my cough minus the bladder issues as it’s quite personal. Recently got promoted which means I don’t need to take customer phone calls anymore which helps massively as it was quite straining holding cough back during a call and getting it worse after hanging up.

What has your Doctor / Consultant said? you really need to push them to make a diagnoses, complain if you have to, early intervention is always best.
The health issues might be more straightforward to resolve then you think, but leaving them could cause future problems.0 -
I've been seeing GP regularly about it since I recovered from COVID. I have been quite persistent but not really getting anywhere. After my first chest x ray I saw the same consultant who diagnosed my severe sleep apnea. He put it down as just my immune system being a bit off since COVID making me catch viral infections. GPS don't really have the time to listen to full history (it should all be in journals as I've seen them regularly. The usually cuts appointments short even before all this current chaos. Once I didn't get past reception they told me to see a pharmacist for over the counter cold remedies. I did write a formal complaint that time and investigation deemed I should have been seen and also that I should have been receiving a more polite and helpful response. They said this was because of new staff and shortage off staff. It didn't improve anything though and still got no help from gp. One GP did prescribe me a months forth of omeprazole and told me to use for 2 weeks and then another 2 weeks if stuff improves. Unfortunately I caught a viral infection infection making me off work and stuck in bed for a month. I was in contact with GPS during this time and saw an out of hours GP as well but it was just focused that it's viral and to rest as long as it's needed. After that I was back to square one, mlanother go referred me for an chest X ray in end of November but as work is so busy in online retail I couldn't get time off work and had no money for taxi to hospital where X ray is (40 pounds roundtrip) so I had to postpone it. Now the GP surgery has stopped all appointments but urgent on the day ones and my issue is considered needing routine appointment so will have to wait.
I know how strained it is for GP surgeries ATM so not expecting any miracles.
If anyone got tips of things I can do myself to improve my situation that would be great0 -
You should maybe think about going privately if you can afford it. Have you tried over the counter medication?0
-
Might be a bind, but keep a diary, note down daily what symptoms you've suffered, at the moment you lack a diagnosis, so you can treat parts i.e. if you feel sick, but not a specific illness.0

Even though I got promoted (maybe I shouldn't call it that) it did not include a payrise unfortunately. Even full time working I have UC topups and still with cost of living I'm out of money around halfway through the month. This month was a bit of a catch-up as last month I got payed half of normal last month. I managed to get sick last month on probation so no company sick and just SSP. When I got back from sick leave I had my review and was instated ass full employee off probation. Started training for next step in ladder did really well and got accepted for level 2 in company with review in end of February. As I understood it there should be a small pay increase but then heard from my old team lead that she basically gets paid the same as her team so not holding my breath on that point.0 -
It's gotten to a really bad point yesterday during the day. Called 111, feel silly as I know how pressures the system is and I realise an out of hours doctor can't do much over the phone. Anyway just got a callback from the doctor about 14 hours later. It's 4 am and I managed to sleep for almost an hour around 7 pm and then for 20 min around 12. I almost settled around 2 am but cough and legcramp kicked in making me having to get up and walk around. I am very fuzzy as I am very dependant on my sleep and doctor was obviously rushed as he got alot of people to call back. Didn't really get any advice how to manage it better at home he said I need to be seen by my GP. Problem is my GP has stopped doing routine and refusing me as urgent as it's been ongoing for so long. I am really at my wit's end. I don't know how I am gonna get through work, starting in less than 4 hours. I've performed quite well during November December and if I have a sick day I'm disqualified for any extra cash incentives. I might still not get any because it's for a few per time but a chance of extra 60 quid is better than no chance at all when you like me have no money at all until payday in almost 3 weeks.
I'm surprisingly stable mentally but can feel that deteriorating as well.
Last time I slept longer than 2 hours in row is probably about a year ago and about 15 months since I slept a whole night, it's torture0 -
Bless you @sisinia this sounds like an awful situation to be in.
You said about the omeprozole perhaps it is from the stumock and not your lungs, unless you go for xrays they can't rule that out and i am just wondering if your Doctor has ever mentioned you having a Throat camera to double check your stumock for acids etc.0 -
No they haven't they only asked for chest X ray. Will push a bit harder in January but understand the pressure the surgeries are under at the moment0
-
Hi @sisinia I'm sorry to hear about the difficult situation you're in, how are you feeling now?
I'm glad you called 111 and were able to talk with a doctor however appreciate they were limited in what they could do over the phone. Do you have access to the NHS app? This is one way of booking routine appointments with your GP. Although if anything like my surgery, and many others, they will likely be in a couple of week's time due to the demand.
The suggestion of keeping a diary is a good one. And likewise, I'd direct you to this Urinary incontinence webpage which offers self-care tips for bladder control and I'd also ask your GP if you could access your local continence services department for some professional specialist support. Likewise, the Bladder & Bowel organisation website has lots of helpful resources.
It's great to hear you are coping ok emotionally, however I understand how anxiety provoking it could be to have to keep changing clothes due to incontinence and also the tiredness due to disrupted sleep. If ever you feel this is encroaching on your mood, please do try to speak with your GP or remember we are here too.
You mention that you are normally out of month half way through the month, are you able to buy essentials such as food still? Also have you used a benefits calculator to check you are getting everything you are entitled to?
Lastly (sorry for bombarding you!) but falling asleep whilst working must be difficult. Would you feel comfortable speaking with your employer about this, as it may be that implementing reasonable adjustments, such as short breaks to nap, would help your overall performance?
Please let us know how you are keeping and I hope you have a nice Boxing Day (even if working!)0 -
My GP stopped all routine appointments completely a few weeks ago as they are so busy. They said they are gonna re-evaluate in January.
I will look into those resources thank you. I've been coping quite well but on breaking point now. I'm so tired the cough is breaking me constant tickle in throat that water don't touch at all. Hot drinks does not help either. Fuzzy drinks were very helpful before but now not as effective so had to drink more and now run out. Excepting a big caffeine withdrawal crash tomorrow because of this as well. I'm getting desperate even tried to get my fingers down my throat to scratch obviously did not work I'm just an idiot. Everything makes my cry at the moment. I'm not getting as much done as usual and everything smells like either acid, infection or urine. I'm an extreme shut in as it is already I got big anxieties about leaving the house so don't go out and don't see people yet I'm always sick, I am so tired of this!
I've got some food not everything will last through the month but should be able to have a meal most days. Biggest issue is fresh things like bread and stuff. Got other physical illnesses making me extremely tired so dependant on sugar free energy drinks (can't drink coffee and tea).
I am getting my salary, UC top ups and temporary getting DHP for one more month. Expensive living alone though0 -
Hello @sisinia
That sounds rough, I'm so sorry. If you are crying a lot, it would be worth speaking with someone to share how you feel. There are a number of avenues you can explore to do this including:- Referring yourself to your local 'Improving Access to Psychological Therapies' service online
- Speaking with your GP about it when you are able to see them
- Speaking with the Samaritans on 116123 or via emailing jo@samaritans.org.
- Texting 'SHOUT' to 85258 to speak with a trained crisis volunteer
Also, would you be able to have fresh food delivered from your local supermarket? Or, if that would be too costly, a local voluntary service may be able to help deliver it? That's perhaps something to look into0 -
Thank you for those resources have referred to italk and might text shout later. Used them before and can be quite good.
I don't really leave the house so rely on food deliveries unfortunately I can't always afford the full 40£ minimum spend. Have discovered Tesco does whoosh small shop deliveries though which is much cheaper than Asda who charge an outrageous delivery fee
I only managed to work to 1.30 so have holiday booked for Friday 12-17 so will work it back then0 -

Have not used Sainsbury's. Asda charge if you don't reach 40 pounds and their same day delivery as I've had to depend on alot os 8.50 and they seem to think even less about substitutes and stuff than with normal delivery. About half the time all the fridge freezer stuff is forgotten and once they did not have most things so ended up paying 8.50 delivery for an order wort 7 pound in the end. Stopped using them now, got tired of having to explain and prove to customer service about forgotten items and unsuitable substitutes. Used Tesco a few times 2.95 delivery with 2 charge for orders under 15 quite good so far.
Got prescribed antibiotics yesterday but so far not doing much will keep on taking of course. Got a chest X ray next week. Sick of trying to explain I don't have an issue with my lungs, it's my throat that's the problem. I've drunk so much sugar free fizzy drink last few days, only thing that helps but only in large quantities which I can't really afford so will run out tomorrow morning I think.
Run out of toilet paper, pads and low on food. Not that the food stays down anyway so not sure why I bother trying. Out of clean clothes have cleaned some but no energy left to hang them up. About 50p left in account until the 13th. Yeah life is great at the moment0 -
Bless you @sisinia you sound really down with every think at the moment darling, on a good point so glad you have your xray come through for next week, please make sure you go, it's all part of the process, if nothing shows up on the xray you could surgest the camera to your Doctor or your Doctor may have other tests they wish to do, but to find out whats wrong you have to go to the appointments darling.0

Feel a bit more positive today still been up more than sleeping in the night but managed one longer sleep, might even been towards two hours!
I'm knackered still but gotten more sleep tonight than I have other nights this week so feeling a bit more positive.
Yeah gonna do the scan on Wednesday. Then see what to do with GP. They reviewing their urgent care only decision on Monday I think. Hoping it will be a bit easier getting an appointment0 -
Afternoon @sisinia glad your feeling a bit more positive, it's amaizing how that extra little sleep can help us out.
Really glad your going for the xray, please stay focused on it and keep on top of Doc's. Keep us updated when you can please.1 -
Hi @sisinia just checking in to see how you are doing today?0
