You have referred to both JSA and IS in the title but don’t say what benefit you have actually applied for.

It is not possible to make a new claim for IS.
IS has been replaced by Universal Credit.

I assume therefore that you have applied for new style JSA. The only JSA you can receive is new style JSA which is a contribution based benefit payable for a maximum of six months provided you have a complete NI contributions record for the two tax years 2020-21 and 2021-22.

If you have a health condition that limits your ability to work you should instead apply for new style ESA. Again you need to meet the NI conditions in order to be paid ESA. If you don’t meet the NI conditions you will not be paid ESA but if found to  have LCW or LCWRA you will at least be credited with Class 1 NI credits.

in a previous thread you said that you were claiming UC but it was stopped because your wife has capital over £16,000. If that capital reduces to below £16,000 you can apply for UC again.

When you were on UC did you have a Work Capability Assessment and if so what was the outcome? ESA might be willing to accept that decision without further assessment?

Have you worked at all in tax years 2020/21 and 2021/22? If not then you won't be entitled to New style JSA.

But can still apply and be registered as a jobseeker and provided OP carries out the required job search requirements can get Class 1 NI credits. However, given OP’s health conditions, ESA seems a better option.

I completely overlooked that. Thanks calcotti.
