What benefits are you claiming for yourself as well as Carer's Allowance?alfieparry said:hi i need help if any one knows what to do please,i am a carer for my son who 22 years old ,he has autisum with learning difficulties,he gets pip, universal credit,i get help from the goverment, but my problem is that my very old mother has got me down in her will ,so when she does die i will get money ,but it will effect my status as a carer and the help i get,if she leaves it for my son the same thing will happen, does any one know what i can do ,thank you
Do you know how much the inheritance might be?
An increase in savings won't affect PIP or Carer's Allowance.1 -

Hello @alfieparry
Just commenting to let you know, I popped your post in our Benefits and Financial Support section of the forum, in case anyone else has been through the same and can see this then

So you are probably going to receive over £16,000. That amount will definitely affect your means tested benefits, which are Income Support, Housing Benefit (rent help), and Council Tax Reduction.alfieparry said:hi shirley,i get income support, help with the rent, council tax reduction, between my self and my 2 brothers a around 50.000 pounds any ideas, thanks
I don't know enough about the rules for Capital and those benefits but now that the information is in your thread one of the more knowledgeable posters will be along to help you.1 -
Savings of more than £16,000 will end any means tested benefits you're claiming. This includes housing benefit, Income Support and council tax reduction. PIP and carers allowance continues as normal because they're not means tested. Please be aware that some Local Authorities have a savings limit of £6,000 before entitlement to council tax reduction ends.Once your savings go below £16,000 you can claim Universal Credit. This will then include help with any rent. For every £250 or part there of over £6,000 there's a £4.35/month deduction for UC.Your son's UC will not be affected because of any savings you have. If they have savings/capital of more than £16,000 then the same rules apply to him.1

if the money was left to my son ,can i put it in a trust for him1

If you son has a £50,000 inheritance he would be able to use that money to support himself for a period of time, his PIP would continue anyway, it wouldn't be fair to carry on recieving means tested benefits if he has a large sum of cash. I've never understood why people with substantial sums of cash want to keep getting benefits, it comes across as greed.1

I understood the Opening Poster to say that the inheritance is approximately £50,000 split between himself and his two brothers. Therefore about £16,666 each not £50,000 each.JBS2022 said:If you son has a £50,000 inheritance he would be able to use that money to support himself for a period of time, his PIP would continue anyway, it wouldn't be fair to carry on recieving means tested benefits if he has a large sum of cash. Ok yep my mistake, but comment still stands, I don't think they can carry on claiming means tested benefits regardless due to £16,000 limit. Even if it's slightly less than that benefits are reduced based on savings so would barely receive anything except PIP.ShirleyW said:
