A local council has just built some new properties, listed as almshouses, they have allocated them as purely for over 55’s, whereas I am 49. Is there any jurisdiction to say this is against the law?

don't think so. it's quite common for social housing to be age gated. they'll have age gating for over 40s, over 30s, over 21s and similar.
there will be exceptions for disability claimants. in the case of over 55 properties, they'll consider PIP recipients aged over 50.0 -
A lot of councils do this, they rarely make exceptions to the rule but it can happen,
I recently got a 2 bedroom Bungalow that was “strictly 60+” but due to medical reports and a OT assessment I was able to get it even though I’m only in my 30s.0 -
I would just like to add a warm welcome @norfoftheborda. Please don't hesitate to let us know if there's anything else we can do to support you0
