In case useful to others here is my timeline from applying for PIP to be it awarded and my first payment coming through:

8 Feb 2023 - applied online and received email from DWP confirming receipt

6 March 2023 - received text message from Independent Assessment Services informing me that they will be conducting my assessment on behalf of DWP

11 April 2023 - received text message from Independent Assessment Services informing me of a face to face appointment on 26 April 2023

26 April 2023 - attend appointment

1 May 2023 - text message notification that DWP have received written report of my PIP assessment

15 May 2023 - text message notification that DWP have not yet made a decision

23 May 2023 - text message received at 08:04 saying “ We have awarded you PIP. We have sent you a decision letter explaining the award. Please allow 2 weeks to receive this. You only need to contact us if your circumstances change.”

26 May 2023 - receive payment in my bank account from “DWP PIP”

Hopefully this timescale is of use to others going through the process. In case it is of relevance I live in London

I would be interested if anyone knows when the award is backdated to? Is it from the original application date (in my case 8 Feb) or from when DWP receive the written report? I can’t reconcile the amount of money I received today with either date.

Good news. It's awarded from the date you first rang to start your claim.

Thank you. That is interesting as the amount paid today was much less than what I thought the minimum weekly award was (backdated to when I started the claim.)

The minimum award is standard mobility and before the increase on 10th April this was £24.45/week. From 10th April it increased to £26.90/week. The amount they owe you will of course include the old and new rates.

If you're not happy with the decision you can request the Mandatory Reconsideration. (MR)

Thank you for the information. I am a bit confused because I didn’t think I would qualify for the mobility component because with my condition I don’t really feel I have mobility needs. I am now worried that I have not been awarded the daily living component (£68.10 per week) which is what I had thought I might be eligible for, if anything at all. If they have just awarded me the standard mobility component I have no idea how I scored above 8 points in that section of the assessment. I suppose I will now just wait for the decision letter for further information, but it is quiet anxiety-making given when I read the text message I assumed it was a decision on the daily living component and I was very relieved…

You can score in mobility part for mental health and/or physical health. It does help to have some understanding of the PIP descriptors and what they mean.

While you wait for the decision letter to see where you scored those points and what you’ve been awarded, have a read of this https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/personal-independence-payment-assessment-guide-for-assessment-providers/pip-assessment-guide-part-2-the-assessment-criteria

    Hello Senex
I would like to enquire please did you request a face to face assessment or was it automatically required? The reason why I am enquiring is because I am helping someone with a PIP Claim and they are terrified about having a face to face assessment because they have social and general anxiety and physical disabilities they would not be able to manage or cope with the stress both physically and psychologically.
    Thanks in advance

Most assessments are through telephone. If an assessment is needed and they have to attend face to face they can ask for a telephone assessment.

    Hello Nasturtium

I can only speak from my personal experience but I was told I had to attend a face to face assessment. The location of the centre was nowhere near where I lived and at a time when I was working (working from home.) I managed to rearrange it to another centre closer by but I did not see any option for a telephone appointment or video appointment which I would much preferred. However I did not ask as I did not realise this was potentially an option. Thinking about it now I should have probably questioned that but the process is quite intimidating and they made me feel like I was doing something wrong by even asking for another appointment time (given I was working at the first time offered.) I should also note they kept repeating I would only be able to reschedule the appointment ONCE. I found the language and stance they took to be very adversarial if I am honest.

poppy thank you for your reply, very useful. I have looked at all the guidance now and reviewed the descriptors. I have no idea how I would qualify for 8 points on the mobility descriptor but believe I would easily exceed 8 points  on constituent parts of the daily living component. I suppose I will wait to see what the letter says and take it from there…

    Hello wereallhere
You can telephone the assessment provider (CAPITA or IAS) and explain your anxiety and you can request your assessment to be done over the telephone as a reasonable adjustment. If you explain you are having problems with your mental health because of the prospects of a face to face assessment and you want a telephone assessment they should be able to arange it for you. You will need to contact them as soon as you can.
    Hope that helps

Just to add to my above reply. If you have any problems changing your assessment from face to face to a telephone assessment (if you choose to do that) please report back here saying why they have refused to change your assessment as a reasonable adjustment and we will try and assist you further.
