Severe spinal stenosis

Hi !  I’ve been suffering with severe hip pain for over three years.  Doc sent me for an MRI on hip which came back ok.  Referred me to sports clinic who said it was muscular and gave me exercises.  Pain got worse and my chiropractor suggested I ask for an MRI on my spine.  This showed various things including spinabifida (learning I had this at 56 years old was a bit of a shock!) a tethered cord and severe spinal stenosis.  I am on the waiting list for an operation but wondered what pain relief people were on and whether it works ! I have tried Naproxen and Duloxetine neither touch it :(

    Hello @lisabacon and welcome to the community, thanks for reaching out. I'm sure it was quite a shock to find out about your spina bifida and spinal stenosis from the MRI scan, how are you feeling about these new diagnoses?

    We encourage members to share their experiences of living with the same conditions with each other here on the forum, but I'm afraid we can't offer medical advice.

    It's always advisable to speak to your GP or other specialists when it comes to pain management plans and medication. Have you let them know that you're not finding Naproxen and Duloxetine effective in relieving pain? 

    You might like to look into support from The Brain Charity or Shine, as these charities have plenty of information and advice, as well as wellbeing support too. 

    If there's anything else we can do to support you, please ask, and hopefully other members can share their thoughts.

    Hi Alex thanks for the advice.  I have an appointment with the Pain Management Clinic on Wednesday so hopefully they will give me some other medication to try but just wondered in the meantime what worked for others with the same condition?

    We hear you @lisabacon and hoping your appointment goes well on Wednesday with the Pain Management Clinic.

    Please feel free to let us know how it goes. I don't have severe spinal stenosis so I cannot comment on what has helped/not helped.

    I do find, with fibromyalgia, heat works well but I recognise that is a different chronic pain condition and each and every one of us responds differently to different things.

    Hopefully, you will find something which helps you to manage the pain in the meantime whilst waiting to see the Pain Management Clinic  :)
