Refused Motability

I was refused motability insurance today when ordering my new car. I have got 12 speeding point 3 which expire in Nov this year. I went to court and was not banned due to needing my car for my disabled son. I have appealed but now have to wait 72 hrs for a decision. Has anyone else had this? I have not lost my license so I think this is really unfair.
Thanks
Thanks

Unfortunately you will just need to wait for them to make a decision. They will contact you once they have.0

Yes I know. I just wondered if anyone else has appealed and won. Might give me some hope.1

Hello @sammywilds
I've popped your post into our transport and travel section. Hopefully more people will see and can comment if they had a similar experience0 -
Motability don't have any say in this. It's up to their insurer (RSA) to decide who they will & won't insure based on risk calculations.1
-
I spent most of yesterday on the phone to both and ultimately RSA said it's down to Motability. I have raised appeal with Motability now.
Thanks2 -
If they refuse do you have the option to arrange and pay for your own insurance?
I believe you can choose to pay your own tax if you want to, for whatever reason.0 -
Thanks for this if they come back refusing I will try this route.1

If you mean an option to use the motability scheme and then buy your own car insurance separately then unfortunately there's no option for that. If they refuse to insure you then you won't be able to use the scheme.

When his licence was returned after the 6 months he approached Motability for another car. They told him that he would have to wait 5 years so that his licence was 'clean' of any points.
He had to buy and insure his own car if he still wanted to drive.0 -
That is so bad. They need to make some allowances. I was told by RSA that if I had had accidents rather than speeding points they would still insure me. Does not make sense. I have 3 points coming off in Nov so they said they will insure me then. I went to court for the points and kept my licence. I've been with Motability for 6 years and not so much as a scratch on their cars. Also I've got 15 years no claims. I'm waiting to hear on my appeal.3

From what I've read so far, nothing will change for customers, but personally I would double check whether there is any difference in points allowance after the changeover date.0 -
Thankyou for that I will investigate a bit more.1

Unless you find a company who will accept the motability claims history.
Out of interest, how much over the limit for each endorsable offence were you ? This could have had a bearing on the insurance refusal. Also be aware that any refusals have to be declared to a new provider or you could be at risk of having insurance cancelled; which opens up a world of pain obtaining future policies

My wife had her first and only speeding offence back in 2016 prior to that she had no accidents or points for the previous 56 years. She was caught by a fixed camera and clocked at 34mph in a 30 zone. She was offered a place on a course instead of having 3 points. She refused to go 'back to school' especially after 56 years of having a clean licence and never any accidents. As such the courts fined her £100 (same price for the course) and put 3 points on her licence.
The insurance policy that I had almost doubled the following year as she was classified as an increased 'risk' I would think that over the next 5 years I had to pay over £1500 more because of her 3 points.0 -

TBH IMO ... 3 points - unlucky ... 6 points pretty careless ... 12 - silly to the extreme

35 in a 30 on a road you would think was 40. I was one day out of being able to do the speed awareness course. All my own fault I know but I've been to court and paid a big fine and they let me keep my licence.1

You're still classed as a high risk by motability. Even more so if your other points were all from speeding. I always say if you're not sure what the speed limit is on the road, then keep to lower speeds.

12 points is not silly to the extreme! To be honest I don't need negative comments I thought this forum was to get help. I have two sick parents, a disabled son, an **** ex husband who is forcing me to sell our home and various other stresses going on so to do 35 in a 30 yes is prob careless but sometimes life is stressful and we have alot on our minds. I don't need to hear how silly I am or how much I will have to pay. I have found an insurance for £150 for 6 months to be on my daughters car. This will have to do if i do not win my appeal. 6 of my points were on a dual carriageway the same week when they had changed the speed limit. Don't judge people until you know their circumstances !2

I'm sure it's not anyone's intention to judge you or make you feel bad @sammywilds, that would be against our house rules of staying civil, safe and supportive. You are quite right, we cannot know everyone's circumstances, so it makes sense not to jump to conclusions.
I am sorry to hear about what's happened. It sounds like there's a lot on your plate at the moment, so please continue to reach out for support if you need it
I'm glad you've managed to find a workable solution if your appeal isn't successful, and I wish you the best of luck for a positive outcome. Do keep us updated when you can.0 -
Commenting on my carelessness and advising how high my insurance will be is not helpful. How can I leave this forum please.1
