Are we required to tell the DWP about an inheritance?

A close relative of mine died recently and I will soon be inheriting a sum of money. Is it required of me to inform the dwp? I claim pip and esa.

    PIP isn't affected. If any part of your ESA is Income Related then any savings of more than £6,000 will affect your ESA and reduce it by £1/week for every £250 or part thereof over £6,000. Savings of more than £16,000 means there's no entitlement to any means tested benefits. This includes housing benefit, if you claim this.

    If you're claiming council tax reduction some local Authorities have savings limit of £6,000 before entitlement to CTR ends.

    Do you know how I find out if my ESA is income related or not? Doesn't say on any of the letters.

    If you're receiving anymore than £129.50/week then at least part of it is Income Related. To know if any part of it is contributions based then you'll need to ring ESA to ask.
