Motability & free road tax

Quick question.
As I understand, being on upper rate mobility PIP I can claim free road tax on ONE vehicle.
I have a Motability vehicle which states the road tax is "arranged".
Does Motability utilise the free road tax, so it gets "used up" on my Motability car? Or can I purchase a 2nd, private, vehicle, and get free road tax on that?
(Wondering as we have our eye on an old Land Rover which is expensive to tax (£600) so could be incredibly beneficial to have it in my name!)
Thank you!

You can choose to pay the VED on your Motability car, presuming the data on this is page is still current
https://news.motability.co.uk/motoring/do-you-need-to-pay-car-tax/#:~:text=The car must only be,on your Motability Scheme car.
If the Landie was registered before 1983 then it's exempt anyways under Historic vehicle laws0 -
Thanks a lot @WelshBlue, I was sure I've read their whole site by now but somehow missed that part.
Good point about getting an older one, we are still looking so that's something to consider.0 -
I have been a member of Motability for over 10 years and I am finding more and more difficult to find a suitable car at an affordable costs. I have extended my lease on my current vehicle and only have one more year to run. I have contacted Motability with my plight and they provide no help accept that I can purchase my current vehicle when the lease runs out. I have been scouring the site regularly with no joy. I can not understand why Motability are acting this way considering they are a registered charity which wait for it are making millions of pounds of profit every year. Where is the justice in that they make profit car prices to the customer rises by 3 times and their offer of cars do not meet customer requirements.
I am not the only one in this position as I have spoken to several customers on my travels who are in the same position. When this organisation first came to my notice I could not fault it but now it is putting me in a position of making me housebound0 -

Initially there were no restrictions on what you could lease from Motability. Some leased top of the range Range Rovers, BMW's Mercedes etc. Hence that is why Motability put a limit on the value of the car you could get. Initially it was reasonable but as cars over the years have become more expensive Motability has not increased the cost limit. Consequently the range (without having to fork out thousands for the up front payment) is being depleted. I see it if this does not change that the only cars that will be available will be at the cheaper end of the market.

Ok I hear what you say however it does not account for the profits made by this charity there are obviously some fat cats out there taking a good back hander. What I am also saying is that the prices that exist on new cars have not increased by the amount that Motability prices. As I rely on a car to get myself mobile and there are no cars thar are offered by Motability are not suitable. I do not want a high class car that you mention just one that I can get in comfortably and able to carry Mobility scooter that I can get in without taking the scooter apart which is required for myself to load on my own.
every time I get a vehicle that fits my needs is not available under the scheme any more.
I have contacted Motability about this and asking for assistance but I might as well talk to the wall. Not once have received any help from Motability but the are pleased and eager to get monies.
Not in good humour just want Motability to act as a charity not as a business that has no feeling for it’s members0 -
You can apply for a grant to help with advance payments. However, you need to apply for the grant before you place an order for a vehicle. If you apply after you placed the order you will be refused a grant. https://www.motabilityfoundation.org.uk/charitable-grants/

This is no help. I have paid always paid the advance payment myself and would do so in the future however I will repeat myself . People need help should have some where to go with help on equivalent vehicles to the one they have, but this is not so you get the answers as above concerning the advance payment. I have checked through again and again looking for equivalent vehicles with equivalent advance payment but they do not exist0

Why is that of no help? Motability give access to a grant for help with advanced payments. It’s a grant which doesn’t need to be repaid back.0

The real help is assisting with finding a vehicle with a close to the one I already have. I do not appreciate such a blunt answer and not to be questioned like this. Do not forget they are a charity and there to help disabled people and not a profit organisation and are there to help not just put out a price list. As I said previously I am a long time member and can only compare with previous experiences and I can only say they have lost touch with the needs of its members and need to improve their relationships as they once did0

Hi @danish, I'm sorry if you feel like the answers are blunt, but sometimes the written word can come across in ways the individual doesn't mean for it to. Poppy is trying to assist you and to often do that, more questions need to be asked.1

Albus_scopeYes the written word can be construed as blunt and in my opinion that is how I found it, however let us forget that . You say Poppy has been helping out now I do fail to see that. ASI said I have been looking for a replacement for 3 years now and there is not one that matches my current car for my needs and as I said the information is not what is needed for instance will the car accept a hoist, can you fit in a mobility scooter in without stripping it down , Are the seats electric as getting in and out require seat to move back and down and the reverse for driving ( as my spine and hips are one of my disabilities therefore reaching down to any levers etc is out). Look I could go on with my needs which are not covered in the vehicles descriptions. The site did enable you when you have identified a car clicking on a button and it dropped you into a motoring comparison site showing the ake up of the vehicle now you do not have that facility
