Hi, I was wondering if I receive class 1 ni credits automatically or if I have to contact the jobcentre. I only receive pip as I have too many savings for any income related benefits. I'm unemployed since july 2023 .

NI credits are not included when you're claiming PIP. In a previous thread you said you were in the Support Group for ESA, is that still cottect? If you do then you will receive class 1 NI credits automatically with this. See thread https://forum.scope.org.uk/discussion/105449/working-in-the-support-esa-new-style#latest

Hi, I used to be in lcwra for uc but not eligible for esa but not anymore. Can class 1 credits be backdated as I was unemployed from july 23

When i used to claim uc i got class 3 credits but could i have got class 1 credits also?

    Thanks

If you weren't entitled to ESA then you wouldn't have received class 1. Class 3 is for UC. As you're no longer claiming any benefits apart from PIP then you won't receive any NI credits.

If you have children under the age of 12 and you claim child benefit then you will receive class 3 towards your state pension only.

You can claim New style ESA as a NI credits only claim but you won't receive any money if you haven't worked at some point in the previous 2 tax years.

Did your UC end because you had savings/capital of more than £16,000?

Yes my uc ended as i had savings over 16k, I worked from nov 22 until end of june 23 and my uc ended on march 23, im 26

    From oct 2016 - nov 2017 i had £372.18 from paid employment 25 weeks

    Nov 2017- 18
£533.05 from paid employment 3 weeks

Around jan 18- nov 19 i was on uc not working due to illness on lcw

    Nov 19- jan 20
    Paid employment: £201.08
    45 weeks

Feb 2020- nov 2022 i wasnt working and on uc lcwra

    Nov 2022- june 23
Paid employment: £103.04 for 52 weeks

I was wondering if i was eligible for new style esa as during 1 of the last 2 tax years i worked for at least 26 weeks

Im not sure i meet the 2nd contribution condition of being
paid or been credited with, Class 1 or 2 contributions to the value of 50 times the lower earnings limit.

I was wondering if you could help as im pretty confused and i apologize if my info is excessive

I struggle to call hmrc for advice due to anxiety so thought it would be easier to ask you instead of writing a letter

The tax years that apply now are 2020/21 and 2021/22. Based on that information then it’s unlikely you will qualify for any payments.

You can try to claim and see what they say.

You may have more luck applying in January because the benefit year changes on the first Sunday in January. From then the tax years will be 2021/22 2022/23. I’m not saying you will definitely qualify though.

HMRC wouldn’t be able to advise with benefits so pointless ringing them to be honest.

Once your savings go below £16,000 you can reclaim UC. There will be a deduction of £4.35/month for every £250 or part thereof over £6,000
