Hi I'm just wondering if anyone can help me with some advice.

I have been trying to get a dentist for the last 4 year as everywhere just had a forever waiting list and iv finally managed to get a dentist as one had just opened new in the area I am from and I have my first appointment on the 10th. Now my teeth are not nice they are not pretty I had self neglected them. ( not brushing etc ) I'm really nervous and embarrassed as I'm sure people will understand. I took the wrong paths in my life and iv finally been able to get my life back on the road. And now my mental health is perfect I have no issues no more which is a big point in my life as iv struggled with mental health all my life pretty much and id of been taking cannabis to deal with my problem ( im now 6 month off of weed ). Now when I get to the dentist I'm pretty worried about what the dentist will say and do. my teeth would probably be taken out since they are really really disgusting. What should I expect them to do and say. I'm on the nhs. My teeth really knock my confidence to a very low point and I haven't really spoken to new people in a very long time.

I suffered with my gums for many years but it wasn't through lack of brushing, it was from smoking. I gave up 4 years ago but by that point the damage was already done. I had many visits to the dentist over a period of several years and they tried their hardest to save my teeth and i went through many attempts of deep cleaning, which was very painful and didn't really work for me. I always found my gums to be so much worse after the procedure.

Speakiing from my own personal experience, a dentist doesn't always agree to remove your teeth if there's any chance they can be saved, or at least attempt to save them. For this reason they may try this first by deep cleaning around your gums.

Eventually i got to the point of no return and there was nothing more they could do. I think it was about a year ago now and i had a partial top denture first, along with quite a number of appointments before the denture was ready to fit. I had to have moulding done of my teeth, chose the colour i wanted and then waited for it to be made. Some weeks later it was ready. Teeth were removed on the day the denture was fitted, this was i wan't left without teeth while the denture was made.

Some months later i had a bottom partial denture made and more teeth removed at the same time one the denture was ready to be fitted.

It's not the most pleasant experience and i had to have a few dentures made since then because more teeth were removed.

I still have some teeth but it's likely not going to be too much longer before they are all removed but i'm trying my hardest to wait as long as possible. I've had some painful days with getting used to the dentures and had some of the largest ulcers on my gums that i've ever experienced.

Do my teeth look better? yes, of course they do but if there's any chance yours can be saved i would advise you to at least try that first. Once the teeth are removed, you can't ever have them back.

The worst part for me was getting used to speaking with them in, couldn't eat some things that i used to love and still can't.

Good luck with your dentist appointment.

I need to see a dentist soon am registered with one but unfortunately they are not understanding of my autistic and mental health problems and have no tolerance in fact have been quite rude. So now with agoraphobia I cant get there without a support worker which I dont have. Get a lot of mouth ulcers, burning mouth, and have chronic pericoronitis. Not sure on this but think acid reflux is affecting my mouth and throat.
Best Wishes for your dental appointment. They will save your teeth, almost certainly start with a deep clean. And they should not be judgemental.

    Hi,

Please be assured any NHS dentist you see will do their best to save your teeth. They are used to looking at rotten teeth and gums and will advise rather than judge you. Self-care easily falls away when we are struggling in life and I include myself here.

Somehow, I struck gold when I registered with a new dentist whilst very ill and neglecting myself. He was the first professional I'd encountered who treated me with respect, kindness and patience (before my diagnoses). I would cancel or arrive late for every appointment and cry throughout but nothing phased him. He understood me. This person probably changed my life.

I hope you have a good experience at your assessment next week.

Hi @poppy123456 thank you for your message. I went into the dentist on my appointment today at 12.25 I had an examination etc I was refered to Manchester dental for an xray. Once I have the x Ray I have to call back my dentist and make an appointment. Some of my teeth are good some are bad. So on the next appointment with my dentist we will be making a plan to extract the bad teeth and have dentures made etc so all seems well. I am glad that I made the right choice in going to the dentist when I did and didn't leave it to long so now I'm much happier in myself iv started to quit smoking cigarettes from 10 a day to 4 a day which will help alot more to the point I'll just stop. Dentist wasn't to scary as i thought it was and he was happy to see me and he also said there not as bad as I think. But there still bad in that sense so yeah onwards and upwards think you very much for the advice you gave me it really helped in easing my mind your actually a 💎

I'm glad to hear there's some good progress, I know making that first step is usually the hardest @lifeIStoshort.  I'm in the process of quitting nicotine, so congrats for cutting down so much, that's great!
