Carer's Allowance for Attendance Allowance

Hi. Hoping someone can help me concerning a pissible claim for Carer's Allowance.
My dad gets the enhanced Attendance Allowance. I am basically his full-time carer but I don't get paid for it. I have been looking after him for years and have just been told by friends that I can claim carer's allowance. Not sure if I'm entitled to it though.
This is my situation:
In my 50s.
Not working.
Recently retired on ill health grounds so receive a work pension.
Get a small amount of ESA (think it's called contribution based).
Get PIP myself (standard daily living).
So my question is, could I be entitled to claim carer's allowance?
If so, how do I apply for it and is it backdated?
Thank you to anyone who can throw some light on this.

Contributions based ESA and carers allowance are classed as overlapping benefits and you can't receive both at the same time. You will receive the higher benefit so if your ESA is more than £76.75/week you won't be able to claim carers allowance.
More to the point, does your dad live alone? if so then he could be claiming Severe disability Premium in pension credit. If you claim carers allowance then the SDP will end.
If he's not claiming Pension Credit and he's living alone then he could be entitled to it depending on circumstances because the SDP would be included in the calculation of pension credit.1 -
Thank you for explaining, Poppy. Much appreciated.
I get £64 ESA.
My dad lives alone but stays at mine a few days each week.
He gets the severe disability payment and I think he gets a pension credit payment too but I'll double check. If he gets it, looks like I can't claim Carer's Allowance.
I'm happy to continue looking after my dad so will leave application.

You're welcome. Yes for the small amount of extra money it's not advisable to claim it because if your dad loses the SDP then this could affect any council tax reduction and housing benefit he maybe claiming.1

Hi
I just wanted to ask a complicated question.
Is it possible for someone who is a carer for there sick child to also have there own carer ?0 -
Hi
i just wanted to ask a complicated question.
is it possible for someone who claims carers allowance for being a carer for there sick child, can that same person who claims carers allowance have there own carer for them self who also claims carers allowance?
sorry if you go cross eyed reading this0 -
Yes it's possible but they need to be careful that the person they are caring for isn't claiming a Severe disability Premium in another benefit. If they are and the person claims carers allowance for looking them then this would affect the SDP.AC245867 said:

can someone claim carers allowance for mum even tho mum claims carers allowance for her sick daughter?0 -
I know what you meant and my answer is still the same. Many couples claim carers allowance for looking after each other.AC245867 said:
