I'm not sure if anyone will be able to help as I am from Scotland and just realised this is for England but my son has recently qualified for child disability payment( high care rate) he is 2 so is not right now entitled to the motability component for it until he turns 3, if I apply for carers allowance will I still be able to take out a motability car for him in the future if he qualify's for it? Don't want to apply for the carer side of things if it shall maybe mess up getting a motability car for getting him around as public transport can be a big issue, thank you

Hi @Taliax, welcome to the community. I'll pop your post over to our benefits and financial support boards so more of our lovely members can find it and share their thoughts. We have a few Scottish members, so hopefully someone with the right experience will be along soon to offer some better advice than I can give, but I just wanted to say hello and welcome first :)

Claiming carers allowance will have no affect on joining the Motability scheme anytime in the future.

Are you claiming any other benefits at all, if so which ones please?

@poppy123456 Me and my boyfriend are on universal credit but most months the payment is reduced to £0 and don't get anything due to his earnings, we also get child benefit and Scottish child payment, along side the child disability payment he's just been awarded

If you claim carers allowance this will be deducted in full from any UC entitlement. However because you live in Scotland claiming Carers allowance will entitle you to the carers allowance supplement, which is paid twice a year. See link.https://www.mygov.scot/carers-allowance-supplement

I've also just read that carers allowance is changing to carers support payment in Scotland. If you live in one of the following areas then you will need to claim for this and not carers allowance. You can apply for Carer Support Payment now if you live in:
    • Dundee City
    • Perth and Kinross
    • the Western Isles

To find out if applications are open in your area, go to the Carer Support Payment postcode checker.https://www.mygov.scot/carer-support-payment/who-can-apply

The same rules apply for this as they do for carers allowance.

Please also make sure that you report a change of circumstances on your UC journal and then click caring for someone. Then report your caring duties this way. You will then be entitled to the carers element of UC.

Your UC will also include the higher disabled child element, so please also make sure you tell UC about your Childs CDP award.
