What we spend our money on and bank accounts..

Hi all. I'm new to this so if this question has been asked already I apologise.
Do dwp look at what you spend your money on? I keep hearing different opinions? I know they check our accounts..
Any knowledge on all this subjected greatly appreciated thanks 😊

Hi @sas13, welcome to the community 😊
If you're on means tested benefits, the DWP do sometimes perform compliance checks to check for fraud, which means you might have to submit your bank statements to be looked at. But these are usually to check that you don't have savings above the rules for particular benefits and that you're not hiding or spending money to keep yourself deliberately below the savings limits. They don't do them specifically to monitor or criticise what you're spending your money on. You can be invited for a check at random and if you're invited it doesn't necessarily mean that they suspect you're doing anything wrong, it's just a check.
Otherwise, they don't routinely look at what you're spending your benefits on, so that is completely up to you. I hope that helps put your mind at ease a little!
