Hi I've just received my letter to change over to UC I have until 8th Sept at the moment I received income support with SDP added and a couple of other premiums for being disabled and I get housing benefit and carers allowance.

I also get pip high rate care and standard mobility my issue is I don't know when to change over should I do it ASAP or hang on to nearer the end date and if I was to move but in the same area would I lose my trans protection,

Any advice would be so appreciated at this time, Thank you.

If it was me I would leave it as long as possible to claim. Once you do submit the claim your Income Support and housing benefit will continue for 2 weeks and then stop.

Your carers allowance will be deducted in full from any UC entitlement. You need to make sure you report being a carer and the carers element will be included in your claim.

Transitional Protection erodes over time so if other elements increase or you become entitled to other elements it will decrease by the same amount. Moving to a different area doesn’t mean you will lose TP.

Thank you so much poppy I will leave it as late as possible do you think I should submit my uc claim say like 2 weeks before the 8th Sept and also is it true I won't have much money until my UC is sorted, I'm so worried about my rent.

It doesn’t make any difference whether it’s 2 weeks before on the day before.

Your first UC payment will be 1 month and 6 days after submitting your claim. You will have 2 weeks of HB and Income Support. As well as Carers allowance continuing as normal.

You can request an advance payment but this does need to be repaid back and your future UC payments will be reduced until it’s paid back.

You're welcome. Don't worry about all the questions, I'm happy to answer all that I can. UC is a monthly benefit paid in arrears. For example, if you claiming UC today your assessment periods will be 23rd to 22nd of every month.

Seven days after the end of your assessment period you will receive your payment, which would be on 29th of every month, unless payment falls on a weekend or a bank holiday and then you will receive payment on the Friday before. This payment covers the period between 23rd June to 22nd July, which is one month. Your next payment on 29th August would cover the period between 23rd July and 22nd August.

A day or 2 after the end of your assessment period you will receive your statement and this will tell you all the elements you're entitled to, any deductions and how much will be paid into your bank.

    Hope this helps.

I need to ask them if I can be paid every 2 weeks as I won't be able to handle monthly payments my health gets in the way.

Is it right poppy that it can be paid 2 weekly?

You can ask for an Alternative Payment Arrangement. (APA) If they agree to this it will not be put into place until after your first payment. However, please also remember that once it starts you'll be waiting longer than a month and then you will only receive half of your usual payment, which the other have 2 weeks later. So, it's not easy to manage your money while this is being set up. Are you claiming IS as a single person or with a partner?

Thank you. You can also report your health condition and provide a fit note and go through the work capability assessment. However, if you're found to have limited capability for work related activity. (LCWRA) You can receive both carers element and LCWRA element at the same time because they can't both be paid to the same person so you would only receive the LCWRA element.

Also with Transitional Protection this erodes if other elements increase or your become entitled to other elements so you may not be any better off by going through the WCA.

As a carer you have no work commitments anyway. It's entirely up to you what you decide to do but thought I'd mention this so that you're aware.

Hi again poppy when I do my migration to uc I know I get a 2 week run on for my IS and housing benefit but will I still be offered an advance from uc?

Yes you will be able to apply for one. Of course that needs to be repaid from and future payments will be reduced.

HI poppy I'm sorry I need your help again, I'm just filling in my claim for uc it's asking for all my details concerning my medical conditions thing is I'm a carer for my daughter so do I really have to supply a sick note or can i just claim uc as a carer without worrying about the sick side of things.

Would really appreciate your help as I'm confused which would be my best option, Thank you.
