Motability named drivers

Hi, I have joined the motability scheme and was looking to add a named driver on but the family member had a question as they travel for work and are worried if they were added onto my motability policy and if ever got in an accident would this affect their private insurance policy? And it wouldn’t affect her future private insurance policy’s?

    Hi

The question is not really relevant because a named driver can't use your Motability car for their own ends, it can only be used for your benefit

However to answer, if a named driver has an insured accident then despite breaking the terms of the agreement with Motability they will still be insured yes

If a named driver has a crash, it will affect their own claims history, as well as yours. I don't think it's fair but that's how it goes sadly 🙁

If the named driver has an accident on my motability car it still affects them on their private policy?

    What affects would this have?

they would be using the motability car to help me but they are worried as they travel a lot for work and said even if they helped me and got in accident their concern is would thier insurance go high because of the accident on the motability car

The accident is linked to the driver, not the car. The driver is at higher risk of another accident in future which is why their insurance premium is likely to increase after an accident regardless of the car they were driving at the time.

As above though, I don't understand why they would be any more likely to crash a Motability car than their own car.

    @OverlyAnxious

I might be wrong but I asked a really similar question on a driving specific forum and there are quite a lot of experts here, think Poppy123456 but for cars 😂

I was told that if a named driver has a crash it affects their own insurance history like you say, but it also affects the policy holder because they are the one that has to make the claim

Effectively a single claim affects 2 policies

I think it's unfair, similar to how you can only use your no claims discount on one car, but if you have a crash it affects your personal claims history so affects premiums on all of your cars

"Having their cake and eating it" comes to mind!!

Yes that's right. But as the OP is on Motability, they won't have to worry about no claims discount or insurance costs themselves. Perhaps I've misunderstood the question though.

On normal insurance, you can protect no claims discount, which generally allows you to have up to two claims that year and still keep the same discount in future. The claims still have to be declared though.

they are just worried if anything was every to happen on motability car would it have an impact on their personal insurance as they would be a named driver on motability car?

Will they be the main driver of the Motability car and the only person allowed to drive it?

there will be 3 drivers on the motability car so would it affect all of them or just one even if 1 person was driving and got into a accident?

You are misunderstanding the advice you've been given. Mustang was correct in his first comment here. Yes, if they had an accident in the mobility vehicle they would need to report that accident for their own insurance, which could mean increased premiums due to that accident.

would it affect their license in any way?

No. It would only affect the person driving at the time. Or the main driver if no-one was driving. (For example, the car got hit while parked)

You will have to name one main driver on the policy, and I would suggest NOT making the main driver the person that is concerned about their future policy, purely for their own peace of mind.
