Questions about having a mobility car

How long is the waiting list? I've seen people saying its long, I don't need adaptions does this make a difference?
Why do some cars want advance payment pros and cons of doing this?
How the heck do you find your perfect car? I know nothing about modern cars I have only owned classic cars.
I have only looked at a few and my brain hurts already. They don't give much info on what the car actually has, only basic specs. for instance, I need one with parking help as cannot turn my neck
Even when you look at a car you like there are so many varieties arghhhh
How do you choose your car? did you regret your choice and if you could choose again what would you get?
Im logging off now so I am not being rude by not replying, but will reply to anyone who posts bright and early in the morning

The waiting list depends on what make, model and spec you choose. Sometimes if you're very very lucky it will be quite quick. Other times it can be as long as several months but it does depend on the dealer. You can ask that question when you visit a dealer of your choice. It will just be an estimate though and it could be longer or shorter wait.
The advance payments are because the car itself would cost more than what the mobility payments are. When you pay an advance payment that money goes into a "pot" then every time PIP pay Motability for your vehicle they take a small amount out of that pot to increase that 4 weekly payment.
I'm on my 3rd mobility vehicle, the first 2 were SUV's so big, high and easier to get into, for me anyway, with bigger boots so much better for everything. More leg room too for any passengers you may have with you. Not forgetting car seats. (for my grandchildren)
My current car is a hatchback so much smaller and lower. Do I regret it, yes without any doubts. Much less leg room, smaller boot and less room for the car seats and it can be a nightmare getting my granddaughter into hers. The only things I like about it, is it's very comfortable to drive (very important) and it's a self charging hybrid so fuel economy is higher.
I'm due to order my next one in December this year and this time I'll be going back the the SUV and will be staying well away from all hatchbacks. Self charging hybrid is top of my list because it suits me perfectly and I love the fuel economy.
How do you find the perfect car? Hmm difficult when the test drive is usually short. There are some dealers that will allow you to take the car for as long as a couple of hours. It's very difficult to make a decision based on a very short amount of time because to get the feel of the car, the seat, the way it drives, for me a longer time would be needed.
Maybe make a list of what spec is important to you, such as dual zone air conditioning, blind spot monitoring, manual or automatic, lumber support (very important for me and makes a HUGE difference) heated seats perhaps? lovely on a cold winters day!
I have a good knowledge of cars so for me that's helpful. To know more details on the spec you can look at dealer websites to see what\s included and it will give you the full list. Or if that confuses you can go to a dealer and ask, they will tell you.
Yes, there's so many to choose from but make a shorter list of what you want and don't want and take it from there.
Good luck. That new car smell! and the ease of driving new cars, I love it. Some people think Motability isn't worth it but for me it's worth every penny. Worry free motoring at its best.

Thank you Poppy. interesting post
after one car disaster after another, I just want a car that gives me peace of mind. The 2nd hand car market is out of control with so many scammers even many websites are scams. HP costs more a mth than mobility, I know you own it after a couple of years but then comes MOT, running repairs, services,I would love someone to say here is a great 2nd hand car that's perfect for you. But it is a nightmare these days. its got out of control these last few years
is it worth it for me? I only go out once sometimes twice a week and that's only local. but to not have the worry anymore that something is going to go wrong and cost me a fortune. I'm housebound without my car.
I normally get a hatchback its suits me, but I am having trouble getting into it when I have been walking for a little while, I don't know if its because its low and something higher would be better. I can't walk around and then ask people if I can try out the height of their car. 🤣 Getting my right leg into the car is harder than the left is that because im too low? it would be a costly mistake if I got something higher and then after shopping, I could not get into it because higher was worse
I used to know so many car people who could help me but now I don't know anyone when I need them the most sods law
I dont have a great perception of cars size on the list I was looking at one I thought was medium to large and it said small hatchback 🙄🤣
Old cars I know the size of just by the name, but new cars are a whole new world for me0 -

I’m not familiar with that make/model sorry.
You can search for SUVs on the motability website. Then you can use the filter and tick the box where it says SUV.You would definitely need to test drive some cars because you can’t decide which one without first doing that. What maybe suitable for me, could be completely different for you.
All the dealers that I’ve been to in the past have all be so helpful. Best thing to do is visit a few of them and speak to them. Tell them what you’re looking for, what spec is important for you and they will help you.

Thank you Poppy, I found it on the mobility site and just sent the full link from the dealers for you to look at
it's hard for me to just go out and do things like that. I've sent a message to test drive. It's 19 miles away. Not a lot of choices for closer ones, only very popular dealers. Will carry on looking for others, it's a shame you can't save your search criteria. I know you can save cars, but would like to save my filters.0 -
No problem. Regarding your question of whether it’s worth it, for me yes 100% but I use my car most days and wouldn’t be able to go out without it.
If you only used it a couple of times a week then I’m unsure but that’s entirely up to you.
I usually write down the ones that I like so I have them to refer back to. I also make a short list of the ones I like the most.
That car you linked to above doesn’t have assisted parking but it had front and rear parking sensors and rear view camera. I find the rear view camera very helpful and would be lost without it. I have parking assist on my car but never used it.
You mention only popular dealers near you, don’t you like the more popular makes? Vauxhall Mokka comes to mind, Toyota Yaris or Yaris cross (SUV) Toyotas are self charging hybrids so automatics but lovely cars. Fuel economy would be amazing for those too.

The thing is with all the popular dealers you click on the link to look at more info about the car and then it gives more choices I just want the link to go to the car on offer for the price shown. so I can just read what that car has. As you might remember I have learning difficulties and so much info with letters and numbers, within a very short time I am confused and have a million and ten tabs open
Yes, the reverse camera was what I wanted. I thought it was called assisted parking had a look at what it was and thought holy *** no way could I let a car actually do that for me 🤣
I just want something to help me reverse park without having to keep turning my head.0 -
Someone has said if the car is in a bad condition you have to pay money, same as if you lease a car, is that true?

It depends what you mean by bad condition. I’ve had scratched and kerbed alloys, some scratches around the door handles and a few other minor things on cars that I’ve returned. Never had to pay anything.
They are a lot more lenient than when leasing vehicles other than through the Motability Scheme.
If you make too many claims through the insurance they may refuse your next lease.
