I also have concerns that they were allowed to run a trial without legislation in place. I realise that the flipside of that is to have grounds to legislate, and that requires proof - but with data regulations…

I also read a report about this search, but not when it took place. And I feel like the article I read also indicates several of the flagged accounts were actually joint accounts, which complicates the issue. I don't claim UC, but I believe that it is only based on the individual's income?

I'm glad this law has been binned, but also reading frustration from tech firms that they had worked so hard on other parts of the bill, only to have it bogged down and abandoned because of this as a late clause. What was really obvious reading through the debate in the Lords (because knowing detail is helpful) was the complete lack of structure around the policy, and the lack of certainty from the government about its scope, potentially or actually, if implemented immediately.

One comment made in the Lords was that if it wasn't properly structured, it would be open to legal challenge and thus rendered useless before it could be implemented.

Can anyone confirm if it is still legal for bank accounts to be checked by the DWP or as it been dropped. I have recently been asked to upload the last four months of bank statements in my journal. It is making me feel very worried and scared. I hope someone can help me please.

It was never legal for them to check your bank accounts in the context of this thread.

However what you are asking is something different and they can and do ask at times for bank statements which you will need to provide

That's 2 different questions. They can ask you to provide bank statements at anytime. What you've been asked to do is part of the review process for millions of people and yes you will need to send them what they've asked for. If you don't then your UC will be suspended.
