A blue badge for someone with DCD/ Dyspraxia and ulcerative colitis
Has anyone with DCD successfully managed to get a blue badge? Our daughter get Enhanced mobility element of PIP, but only 4 points for moving around (can walk between 50 and 200 meters) but when she needs the toilet which can happen at unpredictable times when her Colitis flares up or because she hasn’t notice her bladder filling up due to poor interception she struggles to put one foot in front of the other. DCD causes her to struggle coordinating movement but the worry of not being able to make it to the toilet stops her going places. One of the reasons they gave for declining her was because they said having someone with her whenever she goes anywhere was a coping strategy making her ineligible. She is in her 30s and goes everywhere with one of her parents. She wants to be more independent and we won’t be around forever. She is becoming socially isolated because she find getting out difficult.

Hi @Sandra7, I'm sorry that nobody was able to help you with your question. Did you end up trying to apply for a blue badge, and if so how did it go?
I don't know anyone personally who has got a blue badge due to Dyspraxia, but I do know someone who received a blue badge due to Ulcerative Colitis. They met the criteria for one as listed on the gov.uk site here: Who can get a Blue Badge? - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
Please do let us know if you managed to find out anything. 🙂

Hi Jim
Yes we did apply for a Blue Badge and now have one on our 2nd attempt applying for one. Cornwall Council phoned me to say the wouldn’t award a Blue Badge because of our daughter’s colitis but were awarding her a Blue Badge for her Dyspraxia. I have seen other parents who have been awarded a Blue Badge because their younger child has Dyspraxia on the Dyspraxia Facebook page, but a child’s disability affects them differently to an adult. When our daughter is struggling to coordinate the movements needed for walking because of her Dyspraxia I can no longer pick her up and carry her to where she needs to be.
