When I moved my Housing associations knew I had a mobility scooter they are now saying I am not allowed to keep it as it poses a fire risk where it is stored, this is my legs. They are insisting I now need an O T referral which I have already had and they have my medical report. My housing association are saying if I do not have it I am in breach of my tenancy agreement I have read it and there is nothing in writing I am now at my wits end please can anyone advise me many thanks

Hi @Junieber123, welcome to the community. Sorry you're having trouble with your housing association, I can understand how worrying that must be. Where do you normally store your scooter, is it inside your own place or within the communal areas? Have they explained about any alternatives or ways forward other than the OT assessment?

You could try talking to a local housing adviser to see if they can help support you with ways to talk to your housing association. https://advicelocal.uk/ might be worth a look for someone local. You could also try Citizens Advice to see if they can advise you on the next steps.

This is just a stray thought and may be useless but here goes. Seems to me the only part of a scooter than can be a fire risk is the battery and batteries are removable, so take out the battery and negotiate with them where it can be stored, not the whole scooter.

Hi Junieber and welcome to the Scope forum!

For my HA, nothing can be left in communal areas including plants and door mats. They are all deemed a fire risk. Nothing is allowed.

If a mobility scooter is forbidden inside your flat then that should extend to e-scooters and bikes too which would be hard to enforce. Certainly, this hasn't been raised where I live.

They agreed to storage in the communal room and blocked doors off and also put signs up. . Thanks for your help

The fire hazard of mobility scooter and e-scooter batteries is fueling moral panic and a false pretext for discrimination and “mobility racism”. Everyone has a mobile phone in their pocket with the same battery, but with a much worse controller and a disgusting heat sink. But for some reason they are not afraid. I'll tell you why - because a smartphone is convenient and its owner needs it. And a mobility scooter or e-scooter used by a disabled person is not needed by a healthy person. I see a violation of the Equality Act 2010.
