My mattress, the topper, and falling out of bed

My orthopaedic mattress, which was quite pricey, is the worst mattress I've had because it slips to one side of the bed. On top of the mattress, I have a lovely orthopaedic topper. That tends to slip to the side of the mattress. On a few occasions, I've ended up on the floor during the night. Is there anything to keep these things in place? I don't want the sort of cot side affair an OT recommended. I couldn't even get into bed! Thanks, Zipz

Hi could you sew some elastic to the corners so they can go over the corners of the mattress.

I have the same problem, because the cheap but super sturdy and adjustable bed frame from amazon, doesn't have a lip to hold the mattress in place. Watching this thread to see what people come up with. I already tried clip-on elastics that didn't work. Since I have a new mattress, that is easier to move, I might buy one of those car straps I tried on my old mattress, they should work, just have to move the closing mechanism to the underside.

Double sided sticky tape (or velcro tape). Put 6 inch strips bottom, middle and top of each side of both mattresses which will hold them together. Alternatively you can purchase a mattress topper/protector cover which has elastic straps or tapes which easily "hook over" the 4 corners of both the topper and main mattress, to hold them together. Then just your standard sheet on top of that... I hope this helps you.

You can try getting a thick bed cover or blanket to spread on the mattress.

I myself tried that, it's not strong enough, I even used a massive velcro area

I had the same problem. I bought some elastic and my daughter sewed it into the four corners so the topper sits on top but the elastic goes under the mattress at the four corners and it has worked for me

Might be worth a try it wasn’t very expensive

Good Luck I hope you find a solution

I had a memory foam topper which did that, and I ended up buying a new mattress in a Bensons beds sale. It cost me nearly £600 with a mattress protector as well, but I paid by klarna in 3 instalments. None of the charities would offer any thing suitable for a scoliosis sufferer.

Anti-slip mat from eBay but a bit wider than this (or buy two strips) Black Anti Slip Mat Roll 150x30cm | Grip Matting Matt Drawer Liner Multi Purpose £2.99

Can be used to stop sofa cushions moving etc.

THank you All. I have a mattress cover but it's not deep enough to bond the topper and mattress together and keep the while lot (and me) from sliding.

I was going to suggest Velcro stitched to the top and bottom. You can buy iron on ones and the weight should hold them in place.

I would literally search amazon for "car mounting straps", £8 free next day delivery. Those will work, trust me.

My mattress topper slides every night, not so much that I might slide out of bed with it, but enough so I have to tug it back in place before bed every night, and I can't walk unsupported, and even then its painful, so it is a nightly pain in the whatsit. I think elastic at the corners would work, but I couldn't sew it on. I have one of those rail things from OT at one side, though, and for ages I wouldn't use it but recently I was struggling to get out of bed and it is very helpful for that. Plus it helps keep the mattress in one place. The topper still slips, but you can't have everything I suppose :-)

What a good idea! That would sort it. Can you imagine using the voucher/ catalogue/ receipt system for a minor disability-related purchase like this? 😂

I'm wondering to have another go with the rail thing. Bed is a headache. Getting in and out; everything on the slide; making the thing in the night and in the morning. I can hardly stand so I have to make the bed on my knees. This time, I'd buy the rail thing myself. The OT got nasty when I sent the prescribed rail back.

Ironing board clips might work, if you buy the longer ones. They are flat, and would clip onto each side, keeping the topper in place.

Unfortunately we tried ironing board clips and they kept coming off.
