    I bet someone will know the actual answer to this one but..

    If we're using the metric system now, why do we still use miles? (should be km)

    Ahh, not very unsolved then lol.

    On a similar note, we sell petrol in litres but still do miles to the gallon.

    Iain Duncan Smith spotting a "fundamental flaw in the ESA regulations" in 2015 which apparently no-one else had noticed 🤔

    Milk/Beer still sold in pints, but water, pop, non-dairy milk sold in litres.

    I'm not sure why they legislated that actually! I imagine it was perhaps a lot of work for the alcohol/pub industry and dairy industry to change and they managed to lobby to retain their imperial measurements.

    I think a cool mystery is Chiareids mention cats purring, I'm not sure we know!

    A similar one, why do we yawn? (Not 'because we are sleepy', but what is the purpose of the yawn)

    I always thought a yawn was to get blood and oxygen to the brain.

    One of the greatest mysteries is where do all the odd socks go 🙃

    I thought that too about yawning, because when we're tired, we don't breathe enough, but when we're asleep, our body regulates breathing. So when we're tired, we yawn to get more oxygen.

    Ha ha, yeah, there's dobby, he comes and nicks them all to free the elves!

    One that always seems to happen to me, the postman/courier always knocks when you've risked nipping to the loo….

    Fruitflies lay up to 400 eggs a day, so all it takes is one to find your fruit bowl and you're in for a bad time!

    Why is cows meat called Beef, pigs meat called pork, but chicken meat is just called chicken?

    If there's no fruit, then I'd be looking around for some. Someone may have hidden some in your house when you weren't looking! They're really attracted to yeast as well, so it could be a loaf of bread that drew them in. 😁

    I think the ears and nose continue growing as our senses start to dull, so we can still hear and smell.

    What was it that The Rock was always cooking?

    Do you have any house plants? If so, those flies could be fungus gnats..

    I do have house plants, snake plant, spider plant and a jade plant. Do they have fungus gnats?

    Probably not a mystery, but I only ever see Robins in winter…

    Ooh I can answer this one!

    Robins are around in the UK all year. But many robins migrate from other countries to escape the really cold winters. So really, we're just seeing more robins during the winter, as they're all looking for food, so will start travelling further for their food. 😊

    Hello stranger! I noticed you'd gone quiet after creating these great threads.. Glad you are back - I am not prying! 😅

    Yes they do. I have those plants and they were all affected. Fungus gnats come in the compost and spread to other plants so treat them all. It may take a year or two to completely eradicate them. Cinnamon powder laid thickly on top of the compost is effective - it's anti-fungal and they can't penetrate it to leave more eggs. Fungus gnats live just below the surface of compost. Bowls of water nearby will also trap them as they look for new pastures like damp window frames or around sinks. Catch them in the air. Good luck.

    A cup of water with a bit of washing liquid in it is great for getting rid of fungus gnats. Or if you're feeling fancy and think you could look after one, buying a little sundew (a carnivorous plant with sticky leaves) works perfectly.
