My ex-partner is trying to convince me living in a separate annexe of my house (he build it himself with his own money Loan) and is not contributing to my household financially, is it going to affect my benefits?.( Pip, esa. And single council tax discount. )I own my house. My ex partner is my carer too .

Hey @eagleboy, welcome to the Scope community 😊 Can I just check what your current situation is if that is alright? Do you currently live with your ex-partner? Just, you mention he isn't contributing and you receive single council tax discount, but your partner is trying to get you to move into an annexe of the house that you own? And they are your carer?

Hi @Jimm_Scope .He is my only carer . I want to help In kind way as he did a lot for us even though it didn't work between us. He build the annexe him self no one is using it. As he is my carer and taking care of me and the kids I would like him to move in the annexe for free of charge and my mental life i would be more relaxed when i now some one is living downstairs..i am always wake up incase some enters my property....but not living as couple. My question is by offering him to live next to us would that affect my benefits?

Does the annex have it's own ****-address? The DWP just may ask and want evidence that you are not living as a couple.

If the annex is included as part of the property for the purposes of council tax then you will retain the single person discount.

Just to clarify as well, your PIP will not be affected no matter what happens.

I'm just going to move this over to our benefits category so other's who are knowledgeable about benefits can provide their answers too 🙂
