GENERAL DIY AT HOME

Hi Folks

Due to my hemiplegia, I have great difficulty in doing general DIY jobs around the house. I always need to pay a 'Handyman' to get things done. I even have issues with using a screw driver and hammer.

Do you know if I can get any financial support with this type of thing?

Thank You

Check with your local council because Banbury area have this service however Witney area do not. I'm getting ripped off by handyman prices. It cost me £80 to get my back gate repaired and even then I still had to adjust it myself so I applied for the Cherwell DIY but I think I'm out of area 🥺

If your pension age there is AA benifit which is suposed to pay for the extra expenses you might incure due to your health condition ,,

This is one of so many things PIP has to cover.

Hi. Yes as @Zipz has said, this is one of the areas my PIP entitlement would have to cover. I have hemiplegia and couldn't manage DIY, so would have to pay a professional. I try to ask for recommendations from friends to find the best price and a trusted person.

Why flag it? I'm confused. It's good advice if it wasn't what I'd already done to arrive at the guy who was well recommended as the 'best' in the area.

He seemed reasonable the first time but then took ages the second visit meeting his target time to quote for his time.

I gave the benefit of the doubt and asked him to come fix a curtain pole that fell down, he came but then insisted he has a minimum time so unless I had another job he would charge me more than the 10 mins job.

When you are struggling you don't want to invent extra jobs to meet the minimum then that job takes twice as long so he can get more money out of you.

There's a lot of cons but I could not complain as he was struggling himself following a stroke so I haven't managed to source a better alternative 😭

Hey @orangeapple57 the comment WhatThe was talking about was from a spammer and they had linked to a site that had nothing to do with the OPs questions.

    Hi Folks

    Many thanks for your responses.

I applied for PIP a few weeks ago. Do you know the average time for a response?

Would all DIY job costs be covered by PIP?

    Thanks

Hey @geek84 it's good to hear you got your PIP application in. Best of luck to you! You may be looking at around 8 weeks before you hear anything, then you'll probably need a telelphone assessment, then there'll be another wait after that, so it wont happen quickly I'm afraid. The PIP money is for you to do whatever you want with, so if you want to use it for DIY costs, then you can do that. 😁

Hi Many thanks for your reply @Albus_Scope

Is there any help/assistance/guidance available on how to answer the phone assessment questions?

    Thanks
