Hi @Burleyk2021, welcome to the scope community
you're definitely not alone in being unsure about this. Scope have a page about applying for Carer's Allowance.
I hope that helps but let us know if there's any other issues! If you are having trouble submitting it be sure to get help from your local citizens advice!0 -
Okay so, small mistake there I apologise! I mixed up Carer's Allowance and Carer's Element of Universal Credit.
Turn2Us have a good page about all the additional elements of Universal Credit including carers element. I would still recommend contacting your local citizen's advice for closer support in applying if the information here is not helpful enough! Additional Elements of Universal Credit (UC) | Turn2us
Edit: I also moved this to our UC category0 -
For your partner to claim carers element, they must first be claiming Universal Credit. They must also be caring for someone that claims a disability benefit such as PIP daily living, DLA mid/hgh rate care, AA or ADP daily living. You don't need to claim carers allowance to be entitled to carers element. If they claim carers allowance at the same time as UC then the carers allowance will be deducted in full from any UC entitlement. If they are receiving the LCWRA element for theirself, they won't be able to claim carers element at the same time. This is because both elements can't be paid to the same person.0

Hi! I have a joint claim with my partner and my partner is receiving the LCWRA, if I claim carers allowance will it be deducted from our UC payments? Thanks

Carer's Allowance will be deducted in full from Universal Credit. There is a carer element of UC which increases your award, which you can apply for as long as your partner is claiming a qualifying benefit such as Daily Living PIP and you provide care for 35 hours a week or more.

He needs to be receiving a qualifying benefit for you to be able to claim Carers Element.
Attendance Allowance, or Pension Age Disability Payment (Scotland), or
The highest or middle rate care component of Disability Living Allowance or Child Disability Payment, or
Daily living component of Personal Independence Payment, or
Armed Forces Independences Payment, or
Constant Attendance Allowance of £90.20 per week paid with Industrial Injuries Benefit or War Disablement Pension.
