Hi, I'm new here. I received a letter from the DWP that has given me zero points for 'Planning and following a journey unaided'. I am unable to go out without support from my partner, sister or a friend. I cannot walk unaided and have not been able to since 2019. Does anyone know what this means please? For 'moving around' I got 10 points and the letters says 'You can stand and then move using an aid or appliance more than 20 metres but no more than 50 metres'. This seems somewhat contradictory and I don't understand it. Can anyone help please?

    Hi,

These two questions are very different, although they seem similar on first glance. There wouldn't be any point in asking both if we would always automatically qualify for both.

The journey question is mostly about mental ability. So if you need assistance to go out because of physical issues, that isn't considered for the journey part.

The questions here are more about whether you have the mental capacity to plan the route of a journey on your own. And then follow it to the destination. It does also consider the safety aspect of being unaware of danger due to limited vision or hearing for example.

Hey @Freya2003, welcome to the community 😊 I understand the confusion, as they do sound incredibly similar. OverlyAnxious has very much got it right. the "Planning and following a journey unaided" refers to the mental and emotional ability to go out. Can you plan a route, follow a route, does it cause you stress or anxiety? Is there any risk in you going outside that means you cannot go alone? That sort of thing.

If you do think that applies to you and you should have received points you could consider appealing the decision.

This page on the Citizens Advice Bureau explains the question best: Q13: going out - Citizens Advice

Please do ask if you are still unsure or have anything else you would want to know 🙂
