I'm 53 year old Spina Bifida Sufferer and I need your help please. I'm in need of social care and have been getting care from a wonderful team in Rugby, but I've been told that I've got to pay £107 per week for my care. I get pip and my wife receives carers allowance, but my wife has got Fibromyalgia and is too ill too look after me .We are up to our ears in debt from trying to manage on our own for about 6 months before we got carers. We've had a financial assessment and the council say I've got to pay £107 per week , we can't afford this so we've had to cancel my carers ,so now I'm unable to have a daily wash . I now owe the council £600 which i don't have.

    Hi,

Is there a reason that you're not eligible for Universal Credit while still at working age?

    Hi I'm getting ESA.

Is that income based ESA in the Support Group? Do you get SDP with it? (I assume no SDP if your wife doesn't claim a disability benefit.)

If you don't get SDP, you would be better off moving to Universal Credit.

UC has to be claimed as a couple when you live together, but you would get the couples allowance, LCWRA, and your wife can get the Carers Element. That works out as £1232.10 a month. Which should be more than your current ESA?

Your wife may also be able to claim PIP for her own conditions to help the overall budget between you.
