Getting a reference

I would like to try volunteering online. I’ve found a place that would allow me to volunteer online for a couple of hours fortnightly or monthly. I’m very excited at the thought of doing this because I feel worthless and a failure at everything. The problem is that, they ask for references and I don’t have any.

I left my last job because I was too unwell to manage the tribunal and reduced my hours in the one before that. The voluntary job will accept one professional referee and another who could be a friend so long as they are not a family member.

I failed all the courses I’ve attempted because I wasn’t able keep up due health problems. I have a lot of pain most of the time so I’m a bit limited at what I can do. I am often tired and slow and don’t get out much so I’m isolated and most people I used to know haven’t seen me for around 5 years or more.

How can I get a reference? Any ideas?

    Hi @wobblyone

Do you have any friends that could give you a character reference? It shouldn't really matter if you haven't seen them in a few years if you are still in contact and maintained that friendship.

There is also some information here on having a "trial" as an alternative to a reference. Even though that website mentions paid work, it may still be worth asking the voluntary organisation for something similar and explaining the situation to them and hopefully they will understand.

I'd just contact them in whichever way you feel comfortable and be honest. Focus on how it's something that you are really keen to do, and what you have to offer them. They will probably be able to suggest suitable alternatives to a professional reference. Good luck, and well done for being brave :)

Thanks for your advice @Mary_Scope and @SarahT41. I managed to get my head out of the sand and contact an ex employer. I think the way I feel about myself isn’t always reality. I often feel worthless and don’t see my contributions as worthy so it was hard reaching out. Thankfully not everyone has the same opinion.

Well done @wobblyone and thank you for updating us! You're absolutely right, and even if its hard for you to see all your good qualities, that doesn't mean it's hard for other people. I'm so proud of you and pleased for you!

You are definitely not worthless and you have contributions that are important and valid @wobblyone. It is wonderful that you were able to reach out to the ex employer, thank you for giving us this lovely update!
