can anyone help, my husband was put of work due to ill health (young onset Alzheimer’s)

What do I claim esa or uc, every time I do the benefit calculator it takes both of our pip as earnings, work part time

    You can check entitlement to New Style ESA

    However in most cases now the applicable benefit would be Universal Credit.

    A benefits calculator is only as good as the information you put into it. PIP isn't means tested so not classed as earnings.

    If your husband as the correct NI contributions in tax years 2022/23 and 2023/24 then he can claim New style ESA. He will need a fit note and the SSP1 form if he claimed this from his employer. This isn't means tested so capital and a working partner doesn't affect the amount he's entitled to.

    As Universal Credit is a means tested benefit you will both need to claim this as a couple. If you have capital (savings) of more than £16,000 you're excluded from claiming. Whether there's any entitlement will depend on your joint circumstances. If you have liability to pay rent to a landlord you'll also be able to claim help with this through UC (if there's entitlement)

    If both of the above are claimed at the same time the ESA will be deducted in full from any UC entitlement.

    No UC don't class PIP as income.

    On the benefits calculator it asks if you claim a disability benefit such as PIP, if you tick yes and then drop the boxes down to what award you each have it should then disregard it as income.
